Not on either list!

My driver is not on the conforming or non-conforming list. It is new but only a cheapie from Sportsworld. It is working well for me though. It is a Dunlop Max 420cc. What would I do in this case then?

Re: Not on either list!

A driver head is considered to be conforming until it's on the list (amazing but true).

However, some conditions of competition state that your driver head must be on the conforming list.

In other words, Brian, I think you'll be just fine.

Re: Not on either list!

In addition to what Lowpost said;

Remember that what makes a driver illegal is some fairly complex technology - creating a trampoline effcet by selective thinning of the titanium face. The production costs of this on cheaper drivers make it less of a worry - I have the same issue with my cheap Slazenger Blockbuster. Trampoline face? Might as well tie a brick to a garden cane

PS - apols for the absence all, and it's good to be back

Cool Re: Not on either list!

Brian I had the same problem with my plus ten driver which was not on the list of lgal or banned clubs so I e-mailed the R&A who replied to me saying my club was illegal, so you can send them a message it will do no harm cheers.

Another Brian.

Re: Not on either list!

hi
i agree with the OTHER Brian, send an e-mail to the R&A and they will get back to you in about 10 days. i did this with my Ping Zing2 driver as it was not on there lists and they got back to me saying that it was made before a certain year and it classed as conforming i don't remember what year the drivers start to conform.
so if your like me and still using one of the older drivers then you should be in luck.
cheers
bill

Re: Not on either list!

One thing though.

I believe it is up to the competitor to ensure conforming clubs, so even if it is 'legal' until it's on the use, any other competitor can protest it, in which case you can't use it, until you have documented it's legality.

Re: Not on either list!

hi mox
i know the last club i was a member had one old guy that played with ping eyes2 but it was the square groves and one guy complained that they were the banned clubs, the club had a meeting and decided that the player did not get any advantage using the clubs and decided he could use them when playing medals, no one ever bothered about it after that but i do think it diffrent if the player does get some advantage using a club thats not conforming. also had a guy this year use a K1 speed drive that was put on the illegal list this year but again he plays off 18 and gains no advantage and only got the club a few months before. if all players played scratch then there would be an advantage to one player so i think its good some clubs use common sense, i know if the older guy had to change his old ping eye2 he could not afford to buy other clubs and would have to stop playing, i think we often forget this is a fun game and meant to be enjoyed. if playing for fun or to play in the weekly medal then i don't think it a life or death thing to play with a driver thats not on the R%A list, if that guy was winning every week then maybe someone would complain but thankfully i have only heard of someone complain once about that old guys clubs and that in over almost 30 years playing. and most clubs it up to there committee if to implement the use of the R&A driver list.
cheers
bill

Re: Not on either list!

Hi
from the R&A site.
appendix 1, part C, 1a. if the committee wishes to limit players to drivers that have a clubhead identified by model and loft, and is on the Conforming Drivers Head list, the list should be made available and the following conditions of competition used:

Any driver the player carries must have a clubhead, identified by model and loft, that is named on the current list of Conforming Driver Heads issued by the R&A.

Exception: A driver with a clubhead that was manufactured prior to 1999 is exempt from this condidion.

hope that helps some of you with older drivers.
cheers
bill

Re: Not on either list!

As Bill said in Post 9, it would be a shame if people are having to give up perfectly good equipment if they are an average weekend handicap hacker. If the equipment is so good, then they'll play off .4 lower than if they had 'conforming' equipment.

I can't help but be cynical that the manufacturers had a double win with the R&A / USGA - not only were their non-conforming clubs able to be used and sold for a number of years after they were deemed illegal, they were then deemed illegal for member comps etc as well. Seems to me that it should've been a pro / scratch amateur rule, but that it shouldn't have affected us mug hacks.

Cheers
Toos
