| Balls, Long Irons and Hybrids I realize this probably isn't the perfect place for this post but this is where I post frequently... I use Callaway X Forged irons and I have had the shafts set up for me (rifle 6 and 6.5) for optimum ball flight. Here is the issue I am dealing with: I know everyone is using hybrids these days and I completely understand why. They are easier to hit, can hit from bad lies etc. Trouble is... I still cannot find one that I am completely comfortable with. I find it easier (when I am swinging well) to operate on the golf course with a 2 iron for accuracy etc. I can hit a lot of different shots with my 2 and 3 irons. The guys I played with yesterday could not believe I would even attempt to use such a club. The X forged Callaway 2 iron looks like a butter knife. I used it 7 times yesterday (it was windy) and hit it right on the button every time. I find that I can shape my shots easily with the long irons; it is especially easy to hit low shots (stingers). Most of the hybrids I have used are hard to hit low and I have no idea where the ball might finish. I hit 5 tee shots with the 2 iron yesterday and all finished in the fairway 210-240 off the tee (fairways are lush and get little roll) depending on wind... Here is the real issue with 2 irons and the modern ball- because balls don't spin as much these days, it is hard for me to hit HIGH 2 iron shots. I can get the 3 iron up in the air pretty good but the 2 iron is hard to get more than 50 ft off the ground. I am thinking... change balls? I was using a Callaway ix yesterday. Thinking with going with a Titleist Pro v1x or One of the Taylor Made balls... Has anyone had this experience? My swing speed with a 2 iron is about 100 mph. I am not trying to be hard headed or macho by using a 2 iron... but until I find hybrids that I can do as many things with as I can my 2 iron, I will not switch... Thanks! Tom |

| Re: Balls, Long Irons and Hybrids hi i use a ping eye2 1 iron about 3 or 4 times in a round and i hit that fairly high and i hit about 220-230 yards. like you with your 2 iron i can shape the shot and i find it goes where i want more than my driver. i keep getting told no one uses a 1 iron but i find it a god send on windy links courses. i use a top-flite ball and that seems to fly high and suits my type of play. cheers bill |

| Re: Balls, Long Irons and Hybrids You're in quite the paradoxial situation. You want more height (which means a lower and further back CoG), but want to work the ball (which means a CoG closer to the face). I remember Tom Wishon talking about his 321 hybrids, and how he designed them so that you could still hit them low when you needed it, but it's default trajectory was higher. .335 tip (which can be bored to .370 for a lower flight). I myself went from playing a 5w to a 2H - I can't believe how fast it gets up. But it's still knockdown-able (I'm playing the 785 - the hot faced version of the 321).
