New Clubs

I bought a new set of clubs online. I had them "fitted" and as they suggested I got -.25 from Mens standard and 1`upright. My ball flight pattern prior to the new clubs was high and straight but lacked the distance we all crave (130/140 yds for 5 iron). The flight pattern with the new irons is extremely high and with a slight fade. The distance is a little less (120/125)...I want to return the clubs but not sure what I need to replace them with. They are forged clubs and I played forged prior also. The new clubs are Pursuit from Giga Golf. The 4 - 6 are cavity backed and the 7 - PW are muscle back... all with a midsize grip...any sugestions would be appreciated. I'm 60, 5'5" 187# with an athletic body type...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: New Clubs

Hi there,

Take a look at the Mizuno MX 950 clubs. They are a hybrid set, all the irons are grain flow forged, the 3 and 4 irons are replaced with two very nice rescues that are matched to the irons, the 7, 6 and 5 have a little extra weight on the sole that helps to get the ball up, the shorter clubs are forged cavity with a nice feel.

They can all be bent to fit for loft and lie, including the rescues. It is also important that you get the correct shafts fitted, I think your current problem may be due to using shafts not suited. Mizuno have some good fitting centres that will fit free of charge.

Re: New Clubs

If you're looking to make the club with the '5' on the bottom go farther, there are two options:

1) bend your current clubs stronger
2) buy a new set of clubs with stronger lofts

It could be time for a real fitting. Head to www.pcsgep.com and use the locator, or head to www.danscustomgolfshop.com/registry.html and contact someone close to you.

At 5'5" and 187, I'm thinking that perhaps there's a swing issue/strength issue that's robbing you of distance (although proper shafts could help, too).

Lowpost42...can you explain what your thoughts are on the above statement?
I'm very strong from a physical standpoint. I am short for sure and thought that might be some of the distance problem. I have a very good shoulder turn but lack the arc a taller individual might have...so your thoughts on the strength/swing issue would be very interesting...

I know you asked Lowpost, please excuse me for giving my opinion.

I don't think your height should be making that much difference, I know a number of golfers your height that can hit the ball a good distance. It is not a matter of muscling the club, that can be very destructive. It is more a matter of good ball compression: retaining lag and releasing it at the right moment, keeping the arms loose and allowing good extension through impact.

What he said.

More or less, someone with your physique is capable of hitting it much farther - I know a guy 5'9" and 210 that regularily hits 300 yard drives, and pulls 9 or PW from 150.
