Can I play Titelist

I am interested in buying some Titleist DCI 762 clubs. I am not very knowledgable about Titleists as I am about Ping, Cleveland, Callaway irons. I need to know if it would be my time to play with these or other Titelist irons that might suit my style of play. cb's or others

A friend of mine says that Titelist irons are for better players but I just have this wild hair to mess around with some.

Currently using Ping i3+ with G5 10.5* driver.

Any suggestions?

Re: Can I play Titelist

I just received a note from a friend here in my city. His response to the same question was that Titleist typically focused on Tour Player ability.

He wasn't trying to be mean. My game is nowhere near tour.

Although I am not discouraged I replied to him that I am not wanting true blades, but instead a club that is CB or at least perimeter weighted.

I appreciate your note to my ownself be true. Could I be making a mistake that might place me in a state of frustration?

I have taken 20 strokes off my game since I started playing and am on the cusp of breaking 100 regularly. Not that any of this means anything.

Just a whim.

Re: Can I play Titelist

hi
with the Ping I3s you have a lot of forgiveness so your bad shots wont be so bad, with a blade type like your talking about you give up forgiveness for playability. if you were to try the Ping S58s you would see what forgiving blades are like.
to play well with blades you need to be able to put the club on the ball near the sweet spot but with cavity back clubs you can hit out near the toe or heal and still hit a good shot but about 10 yards shorter but if you did it with blades you would hook or slice if you hit near the toe or heal.
if you feel you can put the club on the back of the ball close to the sweet spot then go for it and you will do well. if you are hitting all over the club face with the ball then you would be better sticking to cavity back clubs.
try putting impact tape on the face of the iron you feel you hit best and try it out to see your hit pattern, if close together then you should do well with blades.
best of luck
bill

Re: Can I play Titelist

TD, welcome to the marketing hype machine. Titleist club sales have actually fallen way off, as the average golfer realises he's no "player" and needs something more forgiving. Titleist used the hype machine to place themselves as 'the players club', IOW if you were playing Titleists you were gaming some players clubs.

Generally speaking, Titleists started out with shallower cavities and less offset than their contemporaries, and had weaker lofts. All that has changed.

What you really need to ask yourself is: What do I want out of my golf clubs? Greater iron forgiveness comes from a deep, wide cavity (and sole) and a thin-face design. Other directional features include offset and a heavy sole, the former for left right and the latter to increase trajectory.

I currently game the absolute most forgiving bag in the world: Wishon 770CFE irons, Wishon 785HF hybrids, Wishon 919THI driver. The irons and hybrids are thin-faced and max COR, and the driver has been constructed so that a 1" toe side miss only results in a .02-.03 drop in PTR values (as tested on my Zelocity PureLaunch).

Is it 'player'? No. Is it 'big name'? No. Does it help my game? Absolutely. But then again, Rocco Mediate was playing some serious shovels at the U.S. Open, and he was the only human in that playoff (the other guy could have won with a rock tied to a stick, hitting an orange).

Titleist 762's????

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Horrid horrid bats, heavy dull and ugly.

Ping or Callaway if you want the best performance off the shelf. Or get a clubfitter to make up a set matched to you.

D.
