Cleveland CG1 Irons

I tested a set of these today during a round of golf. These have been on my "wish list" for a while now, I was very excited when the set was offered to me by a friend who couldn't join us for the game.


I am a "blades" sort of guy, nothing comes close to the soul-lifting feeling when the Tour Ace flies off the face into blue yonder with that "blades ball flight".


The clubs had Dynamix Golf R400U shafts, swingweight D2, standard length, 1-degree flat - exactly the specs I like with Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips. Actually, I bent them flat last night but don't tell my friend I did that.


The heads are very attractive looking muscle backs, nicely sized for blades and sit absolutely square at address with no visible offset. The satin chrome finish is great and not too bright in the sun.


They look great in a gof bag - very attractive and everyone marvels that people still play with blades! That is why I have my name on a golf bag and they don't. I think clubs have to appeal to the eye before you can play well with them. It is very important that the clubs look good and feel even better before you put them into your bag.


They are nicely weighted and felt great in my hands. Many blade sets are heavy ideally swing weighted at around D4 or D5, but these are great for lighter swing weights as well.


The response is 100% superb as most blades are, even with a slight off-centre strike, it still feels good but different to a centre strike. The instant you make contact your hands feel the quality of the strike.


The ball flight is probably among the best in the muscle back market that I have tested and with no offset and small heads are so easy to work. You name it: high, low, left, right ... easy and a great penetrating ball flight from the muscle back design.


The short irons are the strength of the set I think. They have narow soles, a thin top line and confidence building performance from 120yds in. Spin rates are amazing for clubs with a muscle back, which generate a lower flight and spin rate than cavity backs. I could spin a Tour Ace back with amazing zip with all the wedges without having to try too hard. Spinning a 6-iron back takes some doing but it's possible.


As with all the brand-name products, they are far from cheap but in the quality, playability and feel stakes - they take a lot of beating in their category.


Pity I don't have a Cleveland equipment contract or else I would definately not have given them back! They are better than I ever imagined.


9 out of 10. They lose a point because I faded the 3 and 4 irons and couldn't turn it over into a draw, it isn't me, so it must be the irons. I'd probably settle for TA2 long irons if I played with the CG1's, after all I am not Vijay!
