Titleist combo set?

I have been looking for a combo set of irons from Titleist (similar to the PMs but they were only issued LH) so I emailed Titleist. I got this response:

We will be coming out with a set of combo irons.
Probably sooner than you might expect. That is all I can say about this
matter.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has heard anything about Titleist coming out with a combo set and what details you might have????

Re: Titleist combo set?

Not a peep mate, I would have thought the best bet would be to get a set of 3-6 iron 690CB and 7-PW 690MB? Let's face it thats all Titleist are probably going to do anyway just rebadge em with a new number and a little cosmetic work. I'm not a huge fan of the look of the PM's the pure bladed ones are nice and the 3 iron full cavity is handsome enough but the halfway ones are a little strange. I was thinking about building a similar set myself from the Mizuno T-Zoid True and Pro II already got the Pro II's but need to find a set of True in similar condition which wont be easy since they are a couple of years older design.

I am surprised that no one has really jumped on the bandwagon yet since the Taylor Made RAC TP Combo's are selling like free sex more than a year since they were released. I would like to see more quality combo sets from the likes of Titleist, Mizuno and Cleveland. The game is slowly getting back to what it was before matched sets came in, namely a set of clubs that eaxh one you feel comfortable with. It would be nice to see the option to select exactly what club style you want whether it be 3 iron cavity the rest blades or all cavity and just wedge a blade and all the options inbetween. It is probably only a matter of time before something like this happens. Matched sets may soon become a thing of the past (at the premium end of the market at least)and clubs will be sold as a per club cost and you pick and choose the exact clubhead design for each club.

I will keep my eyes open for you Gord.

Re: Titleist combo set?

Darryl,

I agree the half way ones were a bit odd looking, but I assume they would have done something about the look of those with the feedback they received if they are planning a big lauch of these. Even Nike has done well with their pro combo set, though I'm not sure who can hit them. Like you said, they are the current fad and I can't figure out why the others haven't jumped all over this market. It just makes sense to market clubs like this. My bet is that it won't be long until most of the club sets on the market come out in a combo style.

I don't think it will ever come to the point where everyone is mixing and matching each club. Maybe players under a 4 handicap, but that would be it. I sell used equipment as a side gig and most people are looking for a matched set from top to bottom. They don't understand why they would mix an iron set with a different woods and putters. I had a set of Maxfli revolutions I sold and the person wanted a matching SW. When I finally found one and gave it to him he didn't want it because the SW was a blade and his iron set was cavity back and it didn't match. I won't even go into the difficulty of trying to set him up with a Ping ISI driver with the set went....

I am going to do a bunch more poking around with the local golf shops and club makers to se if they have an idea of what might be coming down the tube from Titleist.

Re: Titleist combo set?

Yep, I have heard it is on the way too. I have a friend you is part of Titleist's staff program (I can't say who! ) and it's been around for quite a while and a few players have given input.

I agree with Mizunoman, don't expect anything new or spectacular ... it will be a mix between the CB and MB models, which anyone can do anyway. Any approved Titleist dealer can order clubs for you in whatever combo you want - no problem.

Combo sets are definately for the good strikers ... guys who work the ball and like the blade look and feel. I personally like combo's and before I changed to the manufacturer I'm with now (Dynacraft), I used a combo of Cleveland TA2's (3-6) and TA1's (7-PW).

So what's the advantage of a combo set as opposed to a normal set?

Re: Titleist combo set?

Lowpost,
The advantage of combo's.......

you get a blade type club upto say p-8 iron for the feel of a blade and 7-5 slight cavity for some forgiveness, finally 3-4 will be full cavity for maximum forgiveness.

For a single h/capper above say 5 this would be a good choice of clubs.

For me it Callaway X16 pro series, I love cavity.

It's whats on the card not in the bag
