Are Callaway forged wedges

any good?

I need some wedges to go with the set of irons I just purchased and just wanted to know how these may rank agains say... Cleveland or Yokey wedges.

Re: Are Callaway forged wedges

Al,

When I had my irons they were 3-P only. I had the new design rusty type forged callaway wedges, designed by the great Roger Cleveland who I believe has now joined Callaway.

They are great and have had some good reviews, you should of course try before you buy to find what suit you as everyone is different.

P.S you can have wedges bent to suit by the pro you buy them off.

Ian.

I think they're all great ... wedges are all about feel, so go with whatever you feel comfortable with. You might end have one of each, who knows!!

I have a couple of Cleveland wedges, a few vokeys, 2 Callaways, Ping wedge and every now and then I go through them all and take the ones I feel most comfortable with.

Re: Are Callaway forged wedges

I think the callaways are whats know as 'Drop Forged' this means that the initial formation of the head is a standard casting but then they are traeted to hammering like in forging, this smoothes out the texture of the steel and gives it slightly more of a forges characteristic. By the way, there is little or no difference in feel between forged and cast, thats a gimmick that the forged club manufacturers latched onto. Cast clubs can be made to behave just like forged just as forged can be made to behave like cast, its all related to the final treatment stages.

For the record, Callaway Wedges are very poor. All the guys I know who tried them got rid of them in favour of vokeys or cleve's within months. The local pro cant give them away.

Re: Are Callaway forged wedges

I have 2 Callaway wedges, a 52 degree and 58 degree. These are the original forged design. I modified the 58 degree by grinding some of the sole (near the hosel) to allow for less bounce when I open the blade up for a flop shot. I think this wedge is a very nice design, especially after I put my preferences to it. I have never developed feel for the 52 degree gap wedge and retired it late last year. I prefer my Titleist Vokey 54 degree, bent to 53 degrees.

I just brought a Mizuno MP 51-06 Raw wedge. I will try it at 51 degrees and see how it plays before I consider bending it to 52 degrees. I got the Mizuno Gap wedge to compliment my new MP-32s I just brought.
