Give me the shaft!

I am currently changing shafts and would like any opinion you guy's have. My swing speed with a 6 iron is 90-93mph average and am considering either the rifle 6.0 or true temper tx-90 stiff both very different shafts, with the rifle being much heavier I find (not in a bad way just differnt). Let me know what you think. These are just for irons my driver averages about 103-105 mph and usually use a proforce gold 65 stiff or a true temper ei-70 stiff, just for reference.

Re: Give me the shaft!

It sounds like you are getting just a bit too stiff of shafts. With your swing speed I would tip a regular flex shaft to a 'firm' flex - half way between regular and stiff.

Re: Give me the shaft!

Double D, its always better to play the lightest shaft you can. The TX 90 is much lighter than a standard Rifle 6.0. If you go lighter you can also go stiffer for more control. The main connection between shaft and swing speed is the weight. The faster your clubhead speed the heavier and stiffer you can manage to use. I tend to alternate between R400 and S400 shafts on my irons, I find the stiffness of the shaft only really affects trajectory whereas the weight seems to affect control and distance. I use the heaviest shafts simply because I have very strong arms and shoulders and I find I can overpower lighter shafts too easily, If you are physically strong also thats worth taking into consideration. I would describe my clubhead speed as just above average although for some strange reason I have never had it measured. The ball velocity off my Driver/4 wood is about 150mph so I think that translates to about 100-110mph clubhead speed (although Im very possibly wrong there maybe TeachingPro or Gord or someone will know the numbers far better than I).

I would go for the TX's Double D lighter is always better, they will be less hard work when you are tired (near the end of a long 36 hole comp perhaps?) and especially when you are off form. As far as your driver goes its very much trial and error. Go to a Pro and try some examples of the driver you are using fitted with different shafts. The Aldila NV gets a good name as does the Proforce Blue (tho the ProForce is quite hard work but rewarding) both of these shafts come in a 65-70 gram weight which is pretty light but just above average for a graphite. There are newer models (Graphite Design's Purple Ice or Fujikura's Vista Pro Series) that go up into the 80-85 gram range but these are strictly for the Gorillas amongst us. See what you can find sitting in the demo bags at your local range and give them a try. Unfortunately you cant just number crunch and then go and buy a shaft, you have to go with trial and error especially with the Driver.

Good Hunting,

(single) D.
