You can't just pick a shaft I'm afraid. The only way to do it is to go to a qualified and well equipped club fitter. He'll test your static and dynamic parameters and make up a short list of shafts that suit the results.

Then you experiment with the short list and finally pick one.

You're nuts if you just want to pick a shaft and throw it into your driver.

Re: shaft for taylormade 580XD

I have a 15 year old student. He's 6ft2 weighs about 180lbs and he hits a wedge 145yards (he has Hogan 5 shafts - they're stiff like telephone poles ). His driver (a 6.5* Ping TiSiTec) with XS Harmon shaft flies about 290yards. He drives a slightly downhill par 4 325yards with his 3 wood.

Pity he can't hit it straight though! It goes E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E!

I'd rather be 260/270 in the fairway than not knowing where it is.

True Graham.

Better to be 250 and in the middle, than 320 and hitting 3 off the tee (because you lost your first)!

Ricky it doesnt matter if u shoot the same score, every ones gotta different swing and play on courses that are much easier/harder than others. If he's hitting it 280 plus his swing speed must be at 100 mph +, so a stiff shaft COULD help. A stiff shaft could make him get more accurate but as long as he goes and gets it fitted. My bro just got fitted with a stiff shaft hitting 290, and he's knocked 2 shots off his handicap (to 1.2)!!!

Re: shaft for taylormade 580XD

Ortiz,

Maybe before you try the stiff shaft try a heavier regular shaft. The heaviest shaft Taylor Made do in their clubs as standard (i am assuming the shaft is the standard fit Taylor Made branded one) is about 70 grams. If you are already using that one then move to the stiff. If not then try the 70 gram. Regulars are great for distance and height which is always nice but heavier will give you a little more control.

You might want to drop a degree or so loft an the driver as well. The faster your clubhead speed the lower loft you can use on the driver. Try 9.5° or maybe even 8.5°.

Maybe change to a fully legal driver as well (XD is illegal isn't it?). If youre making changes you would be as well to make that one too.

D.
