Question New Clubs for a New Player?

Hi, I'm new to golf and playing with an old set of Daiwa Tryace clubs that my uncle left over at my house. Except, I only have a 3-wood, and 3,4,6,8 and 9 irons. I also have a SW and a PW. I've been told on the "New to Golf" forums that i should practice with a 5 or 7 iron, the problem is, those are the one's I'm missing! I went to my local golf shop and saw a bag full of $10 assorted irons, and i was thinking, since i'm so new to golf, will it hurt to get a cheap 5 and 7 iron so that i can complete my set? So my question is, will having a different collection of brands for my irons affect my swing?

Also, i'm thinking of getting a driver too, any recommendations for a good driver for a beginner male who's 5'7?

Re: New Clubs for a New Player?

Hi Arkonden,

You would be much better spending your money on a few lessons to get yourself started on the right track.......

Yes it is good to practice with a mid iron 6/7/8 is fine, but this is only to grove a swing into your memory, with a mid iron it is long enough to hit the ball out there to get some feedback on ball flight (slice etc) but easy enough to hit. Ball flight can tell you what you are doing wrong!!!!!!

Seek a good instructor you feel confident in and book a series of lessons, this will give you confidence and maybe buy a set of clubs that suit your swing.

As for drivers my choice for a beginner would be Cobra, very large clubhead, very long and most of all easy to hit.

Hope this helps

Ian.

Don't get down on yourself lessons are great fun even if it cost you a little, find one who uses a computer if possible so you can look at yourself swinging, it's amazing how you actually swing compared to what you are thinking you are doing. I find this is a great way to learn.

What do you think Tiger Woods is doing today, let me guess: looking a screen to make sure he's swinging ok................

I'll second that - lessons with video is fantastic.

There's nothing like SEEING what you're doing wrong, then SEEING how to do it right to change things.

Re: New Clubs for a New Player?

Once you get some lessons under your belt, your instructor may be able to recommend some clubs that fit your swing. From what I've read, nobody benefits more from club fitting than high handicappers and beginners.

If your instructor can't help you with club fitting, he may know of somebody that is trying to get rid of some good clubs cheep.

A 6 iron is a great club to practice with aswell. I myself use a 6 iron to practice. but you also need to practice with every other club too.

Re: New Clubs for a New Player?

I love to practice a 6 iron because i have a callaway x-16 and it gives great feedback and i have amazing control with it. It is long and straight, i would use it for every shot if it were practical!
