Drivers/woods

I think I need to get a new/better driver. I have an Adams Tight Lies 2 15* 3 wood which on a good shot I hit 230yards and usually it goes about 210yards.

I bought a Driver the same (tight lies 2) but with a graphite shaft as I was under the impression that beginners especially should have graphite shafted woods. Anyway, I can't hit this driver at all. I literally haven't hit one good shot with it at the range. The next time I went in the shop I bought a Mizuno T-zoid driver 2nd hand as it was real cheap with a steel shaft and I can't hit that either.

I'd like to know like half a dozen suggestions of possible drivers to look at getting. I don't want cheapo stuff but I don't want to pay a fortune either.

Also, I'm only playing with 12 clubs in my bag and have thought about getting like a 5-wood or something to fill that distance gap between my 3I and my 3 wood. I hit my 3I 180yards 90% of the time and my 3 wood say 210-20yards on average, how far would I hit a 5-wood, 4-wood, 2I, 1I etc.?

Re: Drivers/woods

This is probably not the answer you want but I would suggest you work on hitting the drivers you have before moving on to a more expensive one. There are probably some obvious swing flaws that a pro can help you with that would be more valuable to you than the money spent on a new driver. $30 with a local range pro can be much more productive.

That out of the way, I would look for the "older" models that were once top of the line. For example, I went into a golf shop recently and saw the "old" Titleist 975D like so many pros including Tiger won tournaments with for less than $100. I still use the Callaway Big Bertha Steelhead woods. Ping has just replaced the G2 with the G5. Maybe you could find a G2 cheap. Let us know how it works out.

Re: Drivers/woods

I meant to say actually that I'd prefer to buy 2nd hand stuff that was top of the line in it's time. The thing is that I wouldn't know what to look for. A few suggestions of some to look out for 2nd hand would be cool too thanks.

I plan on spending two range sessions this week just with my two drivers and if I don't even hit any good shots at all then I'll trade em in.

I don't think it's my swing (though it isn't very good yet) as I can hit the 3 wood pretty well. If it was just my swing then I'd hit the odd good shot out of lots of balls I imagine.

Re: Drivers/woods

Take a look at the Taylormade's R540XD or R580 drivers. They have really come down in price with the release of the R7. I have a R540XD and I paid 179$ for it. I've actually seen the R540XD at 149$ in some places. Give them a demo if you get a chance. I'm very happy with my R540XD. My average drive is 230 because I'm only a beginner. But I did hit one 320 during a round 3 weeks ago.

The 3W is a much more forgiving club than the driver, because of the added loft. I hit the 3W pretty well myself, and I hit the driver poorly, but it's not because the driver is bad. The proof is that the pro can take my driver and hit the ball 280 down the middle of the fairway with it.

Re: Drivers/woods

There's an old saying in golf, bub....

"It ain't the arrows, it's the Indian".....

Get the analogy????

Translated, spend more time on the swing...not the equipment.....

Re: Drivers/woods

http://www.golfbidder.co.uk/

I have bought several quality clubs from this site at a fraction of the price when new.

It let's you experiment with different equipment for not a lot of money and if you don't like the clubs you can sell them on for about the same as you paid.

Give them a go!

Re: Drivers/woods

As far as 2nd hand drivers, any of the older Callaway models have worked well for me. I've found them to be the most forgiving for my swing. I still use the Callaway Big Bertha Steelhead model that I paid less than $200 for back in 2000. Its not the longest but its accurate. I think there is a pre-owned Callaway site.

Re: Drivers/woods

I've been to the range today and mainly used the Mizuno as I didn't have the right height T's for the Adams'. Anyway, I decided the Miz shaft was stiffer than regular and tried swinging it faster (I swing nice and slow at the moment whilst I'm learning) and got an instant result.

Having to swing faster caused a variety of mistakes but I actually hit a few good shots and out of those I hit 1 perfect in the sweet spot and it just flew. I could actually feel when I was in the right place/did a good backswing but I was having trouble doing it regularly. I think I was doing something wrong with my lower body that I don't normally even think about with the Irons.

So maybe it is just my swing after all.
