New Iron Sets?

As you have seen in my last thread about having the whole set of clubs too short I am now going to get a whole new set of Irons...Any ideas what would be good/great Irons for long time...I am right now looking into spending $300-$400 on a set of Irons

They have some NIKE NDS for 399.99 on sale at the golf course, brand new, any good and worthe price?

I am just looking at some new clubs good for beginners but could keep for a long time and cont to get better with them and like I said at this time I am looking at spending $300-400, any recommendations on new set of irons in that price range would be great...thanks for your help!!!

You are making a really smart move starting over with new clubs but I think you would be crazy not to go to a Custom Clubmaker.

I agree. For the same money, you can get irons that perform as well as any major OEM, and get them fitted to you at the same time.

I will 3rd that opinion. OEM offers nothing more than a reputable component campany can. OEMs have to have higher prices though because of the mass marketing. Check out golfsith.com for their Snake Eyes line or Dynacraft - the two of most popular component iron makers on the market right now.

Gord - I had an Accuflex Assassin2 (X) in my Ashton MS-5 head... and it broke! I found the X a little too boardy, so I've got a VS339 in S waiting for it.

That head felt buttery smooth, even with Assassin shaft... I think I'm going to use it for a scramble club - I'm building it with that 339 to 48".

you broke the head?? or the shaft??? I have broke 2 shafts before I beveled the inside of the hosel even more than normal. No problems anymore. How do you enjoy the head? I am not crazy about the sound, but I find it very easy to control the trajectory and shot pattern. TONS of distance. As always, I stick to the Harrison Striper Titanium shafts. They are by far the best bang for your buck. (customclubshop.com has them for under $40 with taxes). My second choice would have to be Penley's Stealth 70 as far as performance for $$$ goes.

Broke the shaft at the hosel. Chopped it up and sent it back to Custom Club Shop (they advised it, to cut down on shipping - brilliant!).

I've talked with a few guys since, and I've now got a nice 20º reamer, and some collared ferrules coming in for when I reshaft it.

I will check that out for sure!!!

Neither.
Don't be tempted by "off the shelf" models.

Get yourself a set of custom fitted SMT irons (in my opinion the best irons I have owned).

I've played lots of sets over the years from big names and have came to the conclusion that you are paying most of your money for the logo.

Small independent manufacturers will give you fantastic clubs ,top class service and go that little bit further to help you.

LOL Snake Eyes. At least brand names make left handed models for most of their clubs. Snake Eyes is lucky if it makes one left handed model.

I've never hit Ta6's but I own some Ta5's and I love these clubs. I find them comparable to the sweetness of some Big Bertha's but they actually look like a golf club. But...I have to agree with the other people recommending components as these will be fitted to you (aren't you the 6'4 guy?), just have to find a clubmaker to do the fitting.

I'd suggest a different direction. If you are sincere about the $400 limit, I would go for a used set of irons. I would look at any local golf stores to see what they have for trade ins and I would look on the net for used equipment if you are comfortable with dealing that way.

As for specific clubs, I'd suggest the latest model of Pings that you can find in that price range. You should be able to get G2's I think. Also look at the Calliways. You should be able to get alot of club for your money. I'd also suggest taking any money you have left over and using it to have a golf shop set the loft and lie on the clubs. More and more often, this has to be done with brand new clubs straight from the manufacturer.

CB2 1 degree flat fitted with 5.0 rifle shafts (still not spined yet) cut 1/2" short which I believe makes the clubs another 1 degree flat (I'm custom fitted to 2 degrees flat).
Tour velvet grips stretched an extra 3/4" to make them a bit thinner (small hands) completes the set.

Best clubs I've owned to date.

I'm now in the market for some of the SMT wedges as I've found a UK supplier.
