7w 9w

Wonder why it keeps recommending a 7W or a 9W to the arsenal? Could it be an outdated article that didn't consider hybrids?

Probably. The article is from 2000 - there weren't that many hybrids around then. Carrying a 7w and 9w can still be the way to go if you can't find any hybrid you like or if you prefer the shaft length and size of normal fairway woods.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. FWs are outdated.

We're starting to see complete sets of clubs built with hybrid heads.

I think that we'll someday see sets that are hybrids down to the wedges, then I think we'll still see classic wedge shapes, and some hybrid shapes as well.

Good to know I wasn't doing anything wrong - the article said 7W or 9W are must-haves :P

It's interesting to note that when I started out moving from the irons to the longer clubs, the hybrid was a club which naturally fitted my swing and I was able to hit it sweetly. But as of today, if I have to compare bet my 4W and my M4 (mid 3-4 hybrid), I would say I feel more comfortable swinging the 4W and impact feels better. But of course if we had to compare how often and how easily it is to hit sweet shots with both clubs, I'm sure everyone would agree that the hybrid gives more consistent and more forgiving shots. But the 4W still feels (and sounds) better at impact

I have both in my bag - Nike 18 and 21 deg rescue and Orlimar 22 deg fairway. The Orlimar is so easy to hit and shape, but gives a really high trajectory and is good for 210-220, no roll with this club either. The rescues hit more like a long iron, much lower and straighter and the 18 deg hits about 240 with roll and I find them difficult to shape.
I may have a look at the Ping G5 rescue soon as I believe things have moved on. I would never part with the Orlimar though.

Ah that's exactly what I was trying to find out, whether people keep the same clubs in terms of distance but perhaps a wood and a hybrid. I guess if you have space for one more club it's ok, but I know a lot of players would rather fill it up with wedges to fill up the short game distances instead...

IMO, there's no point in duplicating yardage - it's a wasted club.

Also, IMO, hybrids >>> fairway woods.

Spalding brought out a set of hybrid irons about 30 years ago. They didnt catch despite excellent reviews,at that time it wasnt the thing to be seen using what were classed as game improvement clubs. We are now in more enlightened times, thank God.
