Blades? Don't believe all you hear or read!!

I know this is an old can of worms (blades vs. GIP irons), but.........

I am an 18 hcp; do I need GIP irons or "swing" improvement irons? I tried the GIP for 7-8 years. Guess what, I'm still a high hcp. For the last 5-6 months, I've been hitting various types of forged blades (Mizuno MP30, Tommy Armour Silverbacks, Hogans, etc.). I get them on ebay. I can "miss" with these irons just as I did with the GIP irons; only thing, I know IMMEDIATELY where I missed. And when I catch the sweet spot, there is nothing like it!! Also, I played in a tournament a couple weeks ago, and I am beginning to strike it BETTER with the blades. With the smaller heads, there's LESS chance of missing the sweet spot. I am through with something that looks like a battle axe. I feel better now with forged. To me that means a lot. ALL my GIP irons are now on ebay: for sale!!!!!

That's my story (and I'm sticking to it!)

Lefty

Hi Bill
GIP basically means game improvement. I toyed with blades for a while, the sweetspot on a blade is a lot smaller than cavity back clubs wich are a lot more forgiving for off centre hits, but when you hit the sweetspot of a bladed club , boy you don't half notice the difference, but on the same respect when you hit off centre, you pay dearly for it. this is why i went back to cavities and have been for over a year.

Silas.

Re: Blades? Don't believe all you hear or read!!

I went from CB to Blades this season. And I simply LOVE my blades. Nice look, feels good and the sweetspot-hit leaves me trembling like a kid in the candy-store after closing-hour. I'm never changing back either. I will not sacrifice shot-shaping for a few more "good" shots per round. I'm planning to get better at golf anyway, so why wait?

BLADES!!!

I do know what you mean. I have a set of Ping SI3+. They are a wonderful set of clubs, but my favorites are my Macgregor 1025 muscle back forged blades. I guess I am just a traditional kind of guy. Nothing like hitting the sweet spot on forged blades.

Re: Blades? Don't believe all you hear or read!!

I play blades (Mizuno MP-32s) and prefer these clubs over cavity backs and most definately game improvement irons. I probably could play with the Mizuno MP-60s but love blades. I would recommend some sort of cavity back irons for those with handicaps greater than 12 or so.

Kenneth Ferrie on european tour uses Taylormade gameimprovement irons, he ses The game is hard enough as it is, why make it harder by useing clubs with less forgiveness?? I agree with him, im a 6 handicap and I use callaway x18s and I love them!

Mickelson even uses CB!

Re: Blades? Don't believe all you hear or read!!

Just bought a set of old Mizuno MP-14's (their Blade line) on eBay. Gave them a go yesterday and I've NEVER hit the ball so well. Maybe it was just luck but I gained distance and accuracy and I never felt they were any more unforgiving than my Nike's. In fact I felt the mis-hits had a bit more oomph behind them so at least they moved down the fairway. Yes they're smaller but so what? FWIW.

It could be the new grips I put on these clubs they're really nice and sticky. ;-)

Love my Pings, bought them last winter on E-bay and dropped my Handicap this summer by 4.

Re: Blades? Don't believe all you hear or read!!

Just bought a set of Cleveland CG2's and honestly, I don't think I'll be looking back. Draw, fade, cut, hey... whatever you want to do you can. Is it that obvious that I'm thrilled?
