Taylormade R7 460, are there any better drivers out there?

Hi all

I am considering replacing my R7 quad driver before the new cor limits come in at the end of next year, I have been looking at the new R7 460 which ofcourse would be the natural upgrade for me but what I would like to know is does anybody out there have one and if so what is the verdict or are there any other drivers out there that you could recommend? I will be looking at a stiff shaft and probably 9.5 loft. I know the new square drivers will be coming out in April, not sure wether to wait for those or not.

cheers

I could recommend a ton of component drivers with shafts that fit you at half the price of a 2007 model.

I think there are a lot of good choices. I used to use Taylormade drivers, I recently switched to Cobra and I am very happy.

I don’t believe in allegiance to one manufacture – my allegiance is with price and performance. I don’t know anything about OEM components – is there a reputable site with reviews and so forth…. I wouldn’t mind learning about them.

Re: Taylormade R7 460, are there any better drivers out there?

I used to use Cobra before I had the R7, they were nice clubs but the one thing that put me off was the fact everyone down the range had to use ear defenders whenever I used them. They did go a long way but to be honest distance isnt really an issue for me because im a farely long hitter anyway, for a bit of a laugh I tried out my very first driver the other day, I had sold it to a friend, it was a Hippo John Daly 460cc with a regular shaft, it felt really whippy compared to my stiff shaft but I managed to hit it 290 yards into the wind so I suppose there cant be that much difference length wise with all the different makes and models. I think I will stick with the stiff shaft and 9.5 loft, perhaps I will go and see the local pro shop and see what they think, they have fitted me out pretty well in the past. Or do I wait and see what these new square drivers are like.

Nike's SQ SUMO (SUper MOment of inertia squared) Squared is coming out around February 1 or 3. It is supposed to have the highest MOI in golf. I think it is about $400.

LP,

I have an Adams Redline 460 with an 11.5* loft. I shoot in the low 90's and could get into the 80's with short game improvement.

What component driver(s) and shaft(s) do you recommend?

Thanks.
Bill

I can take a Wishon 949MC and add a hosel weight and tip pin, while playing it at 45" to equal the SUMO MOI.

Don't be fooled - MOI can be modified as a build spec.

If you give me a driver that's got 5800 MOI (not eMOI - which is just TM marketing puke), I can construct it to end up over the limit. In fact, I'm interested to see if we end up with drivers that 'inadvertently' end up over, due to playing characteristics (ie longer with weight added to the head).

@ Broadus:

I cannot make a recommendation without seeing your swing. I won't even try. I can tell you that I'm currently experimenting with rebar in my drivers at insanely high lofts right now, but that I also have a negative angle of attack. That said, I just bought a launch monitor (80% off retail!) and am taking a set of lessons at the end of February with a fantastic coach. I think there's a fundamental swing problem with having a 105mph swing speed with a 44" driver, but only achieving ~12° of launch with a 14° head.

Needless to say, there's quite a few considerations between what you do, what you want, and how you do what you do.

What launch monitor did you purchase and why? I am looking to get a launch monitor and can't decide on which one. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Taylormade R7 460, are there any better drivers out there?

I obtained a GolfAchiever 2.

The main reason was price - I snagged it used for under 1K. A new unit runs 5k.

If I had my choice and a wide open budget I'd go with a Trackman, hands down. Since I don't, I'm quite happy to take a used one for more than 80% off retail.

Re: Taylormade R7 460, are there any better drivers out there?

R7 425 is better.

And the Callaway FT-3 is a great driver, I was getting a ball speed of 190mph with one fitted with an NV65S

But I prefer my R7 cos it hits it a bit lower.

Only problem with the Taylor Made is the standard fit Fujikura shaft isnt great for heavier hitters, just bashes it miles in the air regardless of the loft, so I got the NV75X fitted to mines and its a rocket launcher, the best bit is I can hit it as hard as I like and it just goes and goes, the downside is when I try and steerit it gets a bit odd, but I asked my pro for a club I couldnt overpower and by god he gave me one......
