What Driver and 3 wood

I personally Love my R 425. Hit it farther than anything ive used. I think it's te head shaft combo, it just works right for my swing. Plus I love the head. it doesn't look as big at address as the huge watermelon like Sumo's or FT-i. I like a smaller driver head. Great feel, I can work the ball, and generous on mishits.

I have decided upon a Taylormade r7 Superquad.

I went to my local clubfitter to get fitted for a shaft and driver loft. The session was very good (at Greaves in Glasgow for all you scots) and cost £30 ($60).

He recommended the following spec:
10.5* head
Prolaunch 65 stiff shaft

and with this spec I had 112 mph swing speed, 161 mph ball speed, 270 carry. Which I was very happy with, however the RPM was 3800 with Titleist Pro V1x and 3200 with Callaway HX tour and Srixon balls. He said that my high rpm was due to me working on my swing and the clubface being slightly open.

Would any clubfitters out there recommend anything different?

I think the theroy behind composite heads: is if you use 2 materials 1 heavier and one lighter you can distribute where you want the weight of the club head to be, most use the lighter material on top of the club head to get the weight lower, thereby cause the ball to launch higher.

Well, your smash factor (ball speed divided by swing speed) is 1.44 - that's pretty good. I generate the same kid of ball speed, but less distance as my launch angle is low - only 10° or so (with an 11° high launch driver)

It would seem that if you close the clubface a little more, then your spin will drop - the V1x would be the better ball, as the HX Tour may not spin enough. If you're NOT going to close the clubface, then the HX Tour may be your ball for max driver distance. The suspiciously missing info is your Launch Angle. If your LA is low, then there's no doubt that the V1x is the ball for you. If it's crazy high, then you may still want to consider the HX Tour.

For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.

I think my launch angle was 12* but it might have been 16*. I can't remember. He didn't seem concerned with the launch angle and the launch monitor showed a nice rainbow flight with the 10.5* and prolaunch 65 spec so I think it would have been 12*, if that is the better of the 2.

Before I order the club, I was worried with the spec as I strike the ball well and the clubfitter even said that my shortgame must be poor cos 9 handicappers don't hit the ball the way I do. However in that case is 10.5* driver with a mid/high launch shaft not suggest a higher handicapper? although i have since discovered Richard Sterne plays the same spec with a r7 425 and Bjorn, Weir and quite a few tayloremade players play a 10.5* driver.

I also note the torque of the Prolaunch 65 is 2.8* and I know torque is how much a shaft twists so does that mean my club is quite stiff and will give more accuracy???

I guess it's a tough position. Lets say that your LA is 12 degrees and your spin is 3800 rpm with a Pro V1x. To increase loft on your driver to get your LA higher is only going to increase the spin rate - and anything higher than 3800 rpm is going to give you fits in the slightest of breezes.

2.8 torque is slightly less torque than the average shaft, but will still give you plenty of feel. In other words, the shaft should feel firm enough, but not like a board or rebar (usually saved for 2.2 or less).

So as it stands, provided that the driver that you get fits the spec that you've been fitted to (ie while it's stamped 10.5 on the sole, it's also 10.5 on the gauge, and the shaft is actually in the butt flex that the PL is designated in for your flex), you'll probably have a decent driver.

Just remember, no equipment can fix a wide open (or dead shut) clubface at impact.

I thought the received wisdom was that the main difference between a 9 and a 2 wasn't the shots, it was the consistency. I'd have given a clip round the ears for his cheek
