Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Hi folks

I suffer from CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME , this occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The median nerve controls sensations to the palm side of the thumb and fingers (although not the little finger), as well as impulses to some small muscles in the hand that allow the fingers and thumb to move. The result may be pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm.
I can go for months without any symptons or pain , but recently it has started in my left wrist too. At its worst i am unable to play golf for weeks on end. I am told that surgery is the only answer but i am also told that it is not always successful.
My Question is , do any of my fellow GTO members suffer with this syndrome and do they know of any remedies ...????????.

Re: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

I suggest you pick up a powerball www.powerball.co.uk

it did me a world of good, and they're ace to play with too!

There are excercises you can do to build up strength into your wrist and hands.

http://holistic-online.com/Remedies/...-exercises.htm

HOWERVER... I AM NOT A DOCTOR, and whilst I had RSI, it was NOT carpal tunnel.
With this advice, your milage may vary. Speak to your doctor before using a powerball or doint the exercises as it may aggravate the issue.

Re: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Thanks for the advice JP.
I am also looking into buying a wrist splint, but i don't know which one. The last bout of this kept me out of the game forr 3 months.

Speak to your physiotherapist, they'll be able to suggest one for you.

Re: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

I hope it gets better for you soon mate... I know there is nothing worse than a work related injury stopping your recrealtional activites.

I was at work 2 days before I had 2 weeks off, and managed to strain my back lifting a large monitor. Then, for my 1st week off work I remained horizontal 90% of the time!

Re: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

aftford,

Check with your doctor about massage therapy. A lot of times the median nerve is impinged by overly tight muscles.

My wife is a massage therapist and I've read in several of her massage magazines that a large percentage of CTS surgeries are unnecessary.

Many doctors don't recommend alternative treatments even though a lot of them are proven to be therapeutic.

Re: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Did you gp give you any exercises to do? Make sure you make time to do them if he did. If he didn't, go back and ask him for some.

Hi JP

i am seeing a physio therapist, which is a great help because i was worried that my wrist would weaken due to inactivity.

Re: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Andy,

Consider massage and bowen therapy.

I have disc problem in lower back. Surgeon recommended massage to give relief - loosen stiffness in hamstrings and glutes.

The Bowen is the first treatment EVER to give me relief in my lower back.

Naturopaths are a consideration too.

Good luck.

Re: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Hi folks.
Played my first 9 holes today ( not hit a golf ball in 4 weeks ).

I don't use a driver and haven't done for years, i'm a firm believer in getting the ball onto the fairway as opposed to hitting the ball a fair way, so i always tee off with my 18 degree hybrid club . I find the shorter shaft gives me more control over the ball flight.

My right wrist still feels a bit weak and i am still experiencing some numbness and tingling in my thumb and fingers so i didn't want to overdo it.
Anyway , i managed a respectable 37 for nine holes( not bad for someone who has suffered with the chipping yips for years). I was tempted to complete 18 holes but the inclement weather made up my mind for me.

It seems i still have a long way to go before my wrists are fully recovered, i think that i will rest them for a couple more weeks and maybe surgery may be the only future option.
It felt really great to be back on the course again but i'm not going to risk any further damage to the median nerve so, no more golf for at least two weeks.
