Pulled a muscle in my back?

Hi,

This is my first post on the forum but I have been reading a lot of threads here recently, and this certainly seems to be an excellent, informative forum, and I intend on submitting a few videos of my swing very soon for your expert opinions.

I was playing last monday and the conditions were pretty damp as it had rained earlier in the day, which made it a lot easier to attack the pins as the greens were very soft.

Anyway, I was playing in trainers rather than proper golf shoes and on one tee shot my right foot slipped as I connected with the ball and I felt something 'tweak' in my upper back area, which was pretty painful. Anyway I carried on playing as the pain died down pretty quickly, but for the past week I have had a lot of pain on the right side around the shoulder blades.

Do you gus have any suggestions as to what I might have done and what I can do to 'fix' it, as I'm very keen to get out on the course as soon as possible whilst I have some free time.

If it helps I'm about 6'5" and shoot in the low 90s, and can hit my drives roughly 270 - 300 yards and perhaps a little further if I really connect.

Thanks for your help,

Chris

Hi Pal
sounds like you have strained the serratus anterior muscle which sits behind the shoulder blade.
I have suffered from this in the past, when i have been overdoing it on the driving range.
the answer my friend is rest . If you continue to aggrevate the muscle you run the risk of permanently weakening the muscle.
May i also suggest that you get your clubs fitted to suit your height, this will help with your posture.

cheers
aft

Thanks for your reply.

I absolutely intend on getting some clubs fitted, once I have had a few more lessons to properly sort my swing out. I have a set of old Mizuno forged blades that were my Grandad's that I may get custom fitted to my swing.

Re: Pulled a muscle in my back?

That too, it was a really stupid way of getting injured.

Do you have any recommendations for some cheap, yet comfortable shoes that I might purchase off ebay?

Thanks

Hi Lumlum,

Sorry to hear that your have pulled a muscle. I don't think it was a stupid way of getting hurt. It could of been loads of factors that caused it. My own feeling as I do play a lot of rugby in these conditions is that it was more than likely that your muscles got cold causing them to be less springy and stretchy. With the suddern jerk of movement because you lost your footing and the muscle being cold caused the injury. It happens to the best of players.

As regards to shoes then I wouldn't buy off ebay as your should really try them out because the last thing you want is uncomfortable shoes when walking the course.

Hope you get better for springs GTO comp

Cheers
Mark

Re: Pulled a muscle in my back?

Cheers Mark,

I've since found a pair of Footjoy contours at my driving range for £35 which I think is a pretty good price, and they're comfy too.

I'm well up for the comp, gonna work pretty hard on my game over the winter.

Thanks for that, I might check Stubert out, but I'm nowhere near Bury.

Glad you found some comfy shoes and the comp is coming together nicely as we have 16 already with your mates.

Cheers

Re: Pulled a muscle in my back?

I've had the same back-problem, and it actually went away since changing shoes.

I know it might not be the conclusion to your troubles, but my recommendation is to NOT save on shoes. Go to a shop with a proper selection of models and pay whatever it costs to get the right pair.

Playing golf in ill-fitting shoes sucks!

Re: Pulled a muscle in my back?

Golf is tough on the back, wrist and knees, eh? This underscores the need to be physically fit and healthy, not just for golf but for a better life.

Egads, if'n superfit pro Eldrick (Tiger) Woods is prone to an injury (knee), wattabout us amateurs?

wow this is an old dug up thread. i haven't seen artford in a years.

as far as golf being hard on the body is only as hard as you make it. a golf swing can be is very smooth and painless, natural and flowing if done right. i don't think ernie else has ever been injured.
