Unhappy Doctors advice please!!

Hi All,

I would really appreciate advice from any doctor or physio on this site, (if there are any)

I have a problem with a lower back disc (L1) along with a disc in the right side of my neck. I have been told by a consultant that there is degeneration in the lower back. I dont know what the problem is in the neck. I have been to numerous physio, chiro, and accupuncture over the last few years.

Well, today on the course I had gone through 13 holes. I was playing an approach shot and immediately collapsed with a sharp pain in the lower back. I had to be helped from the course and would not wish the pain on my worst enemy.

I should say that my consultant refuses to remove this disc as he says he doesnt think it a wise idea. With regard to the neck injury, this affects me by restricting the amount of turn to the right with my head. I also get pain down through the right shoulder. I would be grateful if anyone can give me fresh ideas as I seem to have exhausted every avenue.

Many thanks,
Robert

Re: Doctors advice please!!

Hi Robert,

I sympathise as I am with you here. I also suffer from back pain due to wear in the lower back vertebrae and like you have been advised by a surgeon that the available surgical fixes can create more problems than they cure.

I was given a course of Pilates exercises that strengthen the lower abdominal muscles, these give support to the lower spine and tend to deteriorate in strength as we get older. By exercising these I have found some improvements.

Worth a try!

Re: Doctors advice please!!

hi robert
sorry to hear of your trobles, i know your pain as i had to give up golf for almost 2 years with compression of L2,L3 and L4 disc and had curveture of the spine too, i had a lot of physio and acupuncture and was suprised the acupuncture did seem to help with the pain a lot. took almost 14 months before i felt i was able to sing a club again and only hit half shots for a few months to get me turning again. i feel great now but still do streaches every morning to help with the disc's.
i think it could take a while so you have to understand not to go back to swinnging to quick as you could start it off again, i thought i would never play again and gave up my membership and so far only played about 15 full rounds of golf this year but at least i'm back playing, i think in long term you should be back playing but with the back it does seem to talk forever, sorry.
hope things do start to get better.
best of luck.
bill

Cmay,

I guess we are all conveniently forgetting the age factor.

Tonight I went to the local fitness club. Spent an hour in the jacuzzi followed by massage. The relief has been tremendous. Next step is the cortizone injection and the exercise plan.

Re: Doctors advice please!!

Cmays,

Many thanks for your kind advice. I have had a cortizone injection and the result is beyond my expectation. I am now in a programme of physio and muscle strenghtening exercises. I will have to accept that I can not go to the golf course for a while, but I am sure that if I abstain for a few weeks it can only be better for me. My physio is suggesting the wearing of a wide belt similar to those you see on weight lifters. dont know whether to laugh or not at that suggestion.
