[Grip] Thumb on bottom hand slides on wristcock

Hello,

3 yr, 22 hdcp golfer - I'm re-doing everything on my golf swing from the ground-up.

I have a very non-conventional swing, ball position, grip, etc that I'm trying to get rid of. My non-conventional swing is very consistent at being non-consistent and that's why I think it needs work.

I wanted to start over with sound fundamentals and this leads me to a question I have about my grip.

When I hinge or cock my wrists back, I can feel my thumb on my low hand sliding on the grip, creating resistance against the hinging motion. My grips develop a decent wear spot on that thumb area.

I'm trying to find out what that low thumb should be feeling. Some grip positions allow me to keep it tight to the grip and hinge freely, while others almost burn my thumb pad off.

Is this a tell-tale sign of anything?

PS - First post. What a great wealth of info!

PPS - What did you think this thread was about?

Re: [Grip] Thumb on bottom hand slides on wristcock

Hi D-Sect,

I don't know at this point, if you have a wrong grip, or the wrong wrist cock/bend, principles.

To start, take a look at this video, which shows the proper wrist cock/bend principle. It is over the top, but it is the best depiction of how the wrists should cock/bend that I have seen, in video or words. Don't mind Martin's delivery, he is a top 50 teacher and that's his style to make points.

The other part, re how to make the proper grip, is available in a currently running thread, I suppose with grip in the title.

Perhaps, this will get you going in the right direction.

Two of my friends actually wear deep grooves in the grips, where their thumb pad rests. I can't believe how much pressure they are exerting on the grip to cause that. The thumbs should not have much pressure at all on the grip, the pressure should be in the two middle fingers of each hand. The thumb and forefinger of lower hand should rest lightly and form a kind of pincher, so at the top of the backswing the thumb would be under and supporting the grip/club. If you grip is insecure to support the swing you are making, and/or there is a flaw in your swing, you will have to grip or re-grip the club harder to keep it under control or manipulate it.

Ted

Re: [Grip] Thumb on bottom hand slides on wristcock

Thank you.

That video was the best illustration of the hinge / cocking motion and the axis of the hinge on each hand.

My previous grip did not have the back of my high hand facing the target, or square with the club face.

(I'm using "high hand", "low hand" because I'm a lefty)

I got away with this for the long clubs because I put the ball pretty far forward and teed high and the club would roll to a good face position at impact. Of course, it is hard to reproduce that perfect angle with so many things out-of-whack.

When I grip the club with a more proper and neutral grip, I feel the hinging action is even free-er with no thumb rub. I think my prob was that I had everything in a stronger position to be able to close the face @ impact with the ball so far forward and high.

It's a big change, to go with a grip that does not feel natural, but that you know is right because of all teaching materials referencing it.

Going to work on this today. A fingery and free grip is my goal.

Re: [Grip] Thumb on bottom hand slides on wristcock

The thumb slide was rectified by using a proper grip in my top hand. My grip forced me to hinge incorrectly. Actually, both hands were in a bad spot.
