Why can't I make a divot?

Lately on all of my irons I have not been able to make a divot. When i do it is very thin, meaning hardly any grass is taken at all. This has resulted in a very thin shot and a loss of accuracy and distance.

I believe it is because I am flipping my hands through impact instead of creating that lag that is needed to hit it square. Has anyone else got some ideas on how to fix this? Please I need help!

Keep your hands ahead of the ball through impact and hit down into the back of the ball, steeper with your mid to short irons than longer ones. Ball contact then turf. That's it!

I would check a few things:
1. make sure you are not chicken winging with the left arm
2. make sure you are not swaying off the ball on backswing
3. stay in the shot and resist the urge to pull up and out at impact; stay down and through.
4. check ball position and move it back until you hit the ball first; a divot is taken after you hit the ball not before.
drill: lead the downswing with the butt end of the club while rotating through the shot, this will have your hands ahead and will create lag
drill: take your backswing and start the downswing but hold and go back to the top. while doing this, make sure you are dropping the arms down instead of coming over.
IMHO

Not a lot anyone can add to the above post's,,,,only try a drill that I use to get the hands working correctly. That is hit some balls with a 7 iron standing with the feet together.

Try The 3skills Mate It does work and concentrates on ball striking and taking that divot

Re: Why can't I make a divot?

IMHO, it all goes back to tempo. I have been concentrating on my tempo, and it has helped me tremendously. I had the same problem as you about a year ago. No that I have slowed down my tempo especially on my backswing, I am accelerating into the ball correctly, and staying in sync. I used to rush my backswing then feel like I had to cast the club which caused me to flip my wrists because I was too quick. Just make sure you stay in you posture and make a nice rhythmic swing, and it will come. Tempo, Tempo, and more Tempo. It's the key to golf!

Re: Why can't I make a divot?

Getting more vertical will create deeper divots. what you want is a long shallow divot..the shallower the divot the more spin you can create.. this is done by laying the club off at the top..instead of trying to point it down the line at the top (right handers) practice laying the club off and pointing well left of the target..if your hitting alot of thin shots it can also be because you are trying to hit the ball on the upswing instead of the downswing..are you hitting your driver very good right now? If this is the problem you need to look at your address position, make sure you are stacked and try putting a little more weight on your left side..and most importantly make sure you end with all your weight on your left side, otherwise you will start taking divots but will hit nothing but fat shots.
hope some of my random thoughts helps
