Winter activity

Hockey helped Happy Gilmour to become a huge hitter and win a gold jacket!!!

Thought I would make a joke since us golfers are all becoming depressed due to the winter conditions meaning a lack of golf!!!

I play (played?) regularly with a guy who would do a Happy Gilmore off the tee. He was all over the place, but drives would be between 300 and 330 yards... Fun to watch, but not very functional.

I think I'll be visiting the local Mulligans Golf Bar over the winter, putting around my living room, and chipping into a mattress or tarp in the basement.

I may even go crazy, and practice my full swing in the garage.

You may want to let your friend know that hitting Happy Gilmore drives is the main cause for broken drivers. Don't be too surprised if the head flies off one day!

I had the pleasure of playing with Rod Langway (defenseman Washington Caps) for some tournaments and had some interesting conversations about hocky vs. golf. He has one of the most fericious swings I have ever witnessed. It was exactly like his slapshot where the club got about 1/2 way up, and his hand release was beyond belief. His ball flight was about 1/2 as high as a normal club, but would go 50+ yards farther... He was a little inconsistant in direction and forget holding any green, but if it did go straight, he was great to have on your scramble team. His grips were about double the size because his hands were as big as a bear and he would use a 10 finger grip where the hands were slightly separated.

He tried the finesse grip and the "pansy" swing as he called it, but it was never fun for him...

I got to watch one of the funniest mements when a group hit into us (apparently by accident), and Rod took it personally. He went to return their ball. "WHO's BALL IS THIS?!?!?! WHAT THE F*** WERE YOU THINIING!?!?!". You can immagine that there wasn't a dry pair of knickers in that group to see a 6'7 angry man comming at them.

He said later that he wasn't really mad, but liked to play around like that.

This is a cool forum, not as serious as some of the other questions.

Before I go onto winter practice stuff ...

I played in a charity day a few months back. I invited a mate of mine who has a John Daly swing but faster . This guy has a 4X Penley shaft in his driver, so can imagine what his clubheadspeed is!

We reached the 6th hole and I drive off first (I'm the captain!). My mate, when it's his turn his crack a nut off the tee gives it an almighty fxxxxxxx rip and I mean R-I-P, he gives this Titleist an almighty thump but straight right. It clears the trees 1 hole down (its probably a carry of 300m+) and lands on the road ... all you hear is screeching and crashes and we can hear as metal flies. All bloody hell breaks loose. Of course, I being the nice guy run over to take a peak and there are cars and bits of cars everywhere!

It wasn't but minutes later this cop rushes onto the golf course demanding who hit the golf ball ... screaming shouting ... wanting to know who it was. Now, I'm not 100% sure I want to point my partner out, it's like telling on my best mate (besides I was scared he'd beat the cxxxx out of me!). When the policeman reaches the adjacent fairway, everyone points to our tee box by which time I am explaining the choas on the road.

Now things are becoming serious ... the cop is getting closer.

The cop gets within a flick LW of our tee box and he is flaming from the nostrils and storming around like a bull in tea shop! My poor mate, albeit he is 6ft6 and weighs 230lbs dried out in the sun takes a run for it! He isn't going to take the chance. He doesn't even take his clubs with him - he just runs for the club house.

But the idiot, in his moment of madness forgot he left his car keys in his bag so he had to come all the way back and find us (accompanied by the cop) by which time we were halfway back to the clubhouse!

It wasn't funny then but I wet myself everytime I think of it!

Anyway, back to winter practice. When its cold here, we don't get snow and by cold I mean 10C, and rainy I use my P3Pro, which I have in my studio. It's got swing analysis, putting analysis, a golf course - the whole works and very easy to use.

10*C, eh? We had a high of -21*C in my neck of the woods today.... 10*C is beautiful golfing weather. We play 1/4 to 1/3 of our season in that weather!

I have looked at the p3Pro on their site before. A few of my buddies and I have been contimplating starting up a indoor golf center in an empty office space downtown and we were looking for software. That way people could come down at lunch time to work on their swing. But, with all the sports bars in our area starting to put golf simulators in, it seemed a bit of a waste since we probably couldn't get a liquor license to be able to compete.

That's a real pity - coz bang-for-buck the P3Pro is great. I love it and it's mobile too! I take it home some nights and bugger around and if the mood strikes, I might hit spend a coupla hours practicing.

You and your mates should pool together and buy it (if you can afford it), set it up in someone's garage and practice together 2 or3 times a week. It's very accurate and it's a lot of fun, especially if you practice together, it makes time pass more enjoyably.

We don't really have a winter like you suckers do. I spent 1 winter in the UK and I practiced in -3C and I froze my nuts off so I went home after 1 hour. I played once in Bristol in -5 when we teed off. I made it through 12 holes and I lost feeling in my feet and hands (dressed like the Michelen man too!) and dropped 8 shots in the last 6 holes to shoot 75. I withdrew and didn't play the second round!

I love my golf too much to have to sit and wait months and months. I'd seriously go mad!
