Putting

Spent 6hrs over the past three days practicing the putting- arent bank holdays great! Trouble id Ive realised through filming my swing that no matter what length of putt- i cant get my backswing longer than my back toe- every shot i just take it that far back and swing through faster or slower- totally wrong i know but anyone got any drills to help?
Thanks

Re: Putting

Its very simple........just do it although a long backswing isnt important, focus on a long follow. But set up a tee behind your back foot and back swing to the tee and then follow through

Try my putting drill and setup the tape and measurements at home.

Re: Putting

Actually Prowlsta, I struggle with the exact same problem.

My natural tendency is to hit the putt. I take the putter back to the same place and accelerate (or decelerate) to compensate for distance.

I, too, realize that the problem this creates is when we're in a pressure situation and the adrenaline kicks in, our distance control is now theoretically shot.

The only way to defeat this is to practice 'pendulum putting'. This involves making sure (ie a concious effort) that the follow through is longer than the backswing.

The way I've accomplished this is to take a 4' 2x4 and mark it every 6" from center with a different colour (so 6" is red, 12" is blue, 18" is green, and 24" is black).

Then I work on my pendulum taking the putter back to 6", and making sure I accelerate through fully until the other 6" mark. Then do the same for 12", 18", etc.

Feel the pendulum work - as the swing gets bigger, the pendulum motion actually makes it easier to get your follow through the same length (more potential energy).

For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.

Lightbulb Re: Putting

Dude, at some point with longer putts your shoulders must engage and rock with a still rest of body. Put a 9 iron under your armpits and feel it and look in a mirror.

Re: Putting

Lowpost- your a legend!
Went out today and was focusing on following through- shot 2 under and only had 24 putts- I didnt miss a short one and I even sank putts from outside 10 feet which never happens-
Long may it continue!
