Re: Which grip do you use ?

Im just a beginner but returning from the driving range with great success.
I was hitting the ball all over the place, 1 in every 4 i was happy with. I decided to give the overlap grip a go. I hit about 20 balls perfect with a 4i around 160-170 on the fly. Immediate improvement. I felt that with the interlocking grip i kept digging into the shot (fat) but with this new grip i dont have the feeling anymore.

Re: Which grip do you use ?

I've used interlock, overlap and baseball grip.

Interlock is the weakest one because two fingers are not touching the grip. Baseball is the strongest one because all fingers are touching the grip. In other words, interlock allows least control while baseball allows most control.

I prefer baseball grip.

Re: Which grip do you use ?

What's the merit of interlocking over vardon or vice versa ?

Which pro's have which grip, who has a strong or weak grip etc.

I am working on swing changes and as a result I need to strengthen my grip so any background info would be excellent for me.

i started by using the baseball grip but was advised to change as it it deemed as the least accurate!
i have small hands would i benefit more from using the baseball grip?

Re: Which grip do you use ?

slater170,

A certain Moe Norman would disagree with the advice you got about the baseball grip. Moe Norman is considered to have been the greatest ball striker ever. He died in 2004.

I don't mean to say that he was so accurate because of that grip. Instead I mean that he was so accurate regardless of the grip he used. Then again, he would've probably argued that the method he used was the best and he would have pointed at his results as proof of what he said.

From my experience, the baseball grip allows the greatest control of the club. Logic dictates that I would, therefore, be more accurate using the baseball grip. I tried all three and I prefer the baseball grip because I was most accurate with it compared to the other two methods.

The baseball grip allows the greatest control of the club because the hands form a wider lever than with the other two methods. The interlock grip has two fingers interlocking each other which brings the hands closer to each other. The overlap grip essentially does the same thing.

There are two distinct baseball grips. The forward hand's thumb folded under the back hand's meaty part. The forward hand's thumb extended under the back hand's palm. I prefer the thumb extended, that way, I feel like my hands are more connected and working in tandem.

The baseball grip allows me more control to make better contact than otherwise. That's the reason I am most accurate with it and why I prefer it over the other two methods.

Anyway, if you can learn how to play using one method, you can learn how to play using any method. Don't be scared of learning one method just because you fear that you will learn something bad. Try it, if you don't like it, try something else and so forth until you find something that works for you.

Re: Which grip do you use ?

hi
why we are asked to use the interlock or Vardon grip is to get the hand together so they act as one and not independantly like in the baseball grip.
most of us are right handed and play where we need more control with our left hand and not our right, in the interlock we take a stronge finger off the right hand and put it inbetween a weak finger of the left and this helps to ballance the hands and weakens the right and adds strength to the left.
in hogans book he talks a lot about balanced hands and being the fundmentals of a good swing. if a baseball grip works for you then stick to it but i feel better to go with a interlocking grip.
the best grip would be for all the fingers to interlock and both thumbs pointing down the shaft like some player do now with there putter and the big fat grips the are as thick as a beer bottle like they use now.

Re: Which grip do you use ?

The 2 best golfers ever been have used interlocking grip! Tiger and Nicklaus :-)!

I use interlocking since i ahve started but i do have very small hands, my dad uses baseball grip and it made his slice disapear! Plus having an off set driver helped HAHA but it definatly helped him!

I think Bob Tway uses baseball grip too.

Re: Which grip do you use ?

When my hands are stiff from age, I revert to the split hands grip; great power and accuracy and hands work together.

Damn - looks like I will be trying the baseball grip!
