Drill for rhytm and feel

Try hitting 3 balls with a wedge and then with a driver. I tried the drill with a pitching wedge and a 3W and it works for me. I get a very much more relaxed swing.

This is little like Els uses. He swings with his right hand a wedge. Very relaxed small movement just to feel the weight of the club. Not hitting anything.

More ideas about how to retain ones rhytm during a round? I tend to get nervious and lose my swing.

Re: Drill for rhytm and feel

Hi Hannu,

Hope you are well, I sometimes hit an odd ball with my eyes closed at the range only just feeling the rythm, certainly if I loose my rythm on the course, I would take a few swings with my eyes closed.

But I usually avoid ever thinking I have lost my swing because it should be impossible, you can't practice something for years then go to the course and forget how to swing, it that thing between our ears that we loose.

Ian.

Re: Drill for rhytm and feel

Thanks Ian,

I think it's a trust or a self confidence issue. I just don't trust my swing. Today I played a fare round - and the difference on set of mind was very clear. When I was trying to hit or was uncertain about something - it just did not work.

But some shot I could make relaxed and I liked them.

Dropped my hcp to 22,8 today...

Have a nice mid summer day.

Re: Drill for rhytm and feel

Hi Hannu.

I have seen the LOSS OF SWING SYNDROME ( as i call it ) happen to one or two of my friends , mid-round.

As Ian rightly pointed out, you cannot lose overnight what you have spent years ingraining.

There are many reasons for L.O.S.S to occur.
1) swing speed starts to increase , which throws timing out.

2) neglect of fudamentals , usually due to tiredness or dehydration.

3) lack of a sound preshot routine.

One of the best on-course remedies is to get the person to take his/her
normal set up but with their feet almost together. Now get them to take
gentle, slow, half practice swings. This will promote a feeling for a slower tempo and improve their balance.
On the next tee, encourage them to pick out a target and to concentrate on the target as they start their backswing . this should help them not to think too mechanically as they take the club away.

Development of a sound pre-shot routine is the best prevention of L.O.S.S

hope this is of help

Re: Drill for rhytm and feel

Hi Altford,

I have noticed that checking the half way position at my back swing helps, but taking a target makes me miss my shot. I get too interested in aiming and the target becomes important.

The "lose of swing" is not a total thing. It's just a "pull" or a "push", but makes me miss my shot about 20% or more. (100 meters shot will go to left or right about 20 meters, and hit a bunker or some thing not so nice.)

I think that speed is the key issue for my misses. I might be trying to hit too hard and start my down swing to early. (Hip does not have time to turn.)

Thanks

Hannu

Re: Drill for rhytm and feel

Too get my timing back on course, I take practice swings with my right hand off the club, left handed only. Very difficult to swing to hard or over power the club, gives me the feeling of proper sequence and slow buildup of power, then try to swing that way with both hands when I actually hit, it usually works. For chips and pitches I take practice swings with my thumb and forefinger off the club, reminds me and prevents me from flipping, you have to stiffing up the wrist to do this. I don't do it all the time, just when I think I need too.

Re: Drill for rhytm and feel

Ernie Els has a tip called "crack the whip". He uses only his right hand.
Here is a link, but I am not sure it works. (You might need to register first.)
