Indoor Golf Range/Net Dimensions?

Hi All!

Obviously winter is approaching and I am considering putting up an indoor golf net/range. Any ideas on how much room I would need? I have seen 10 ft. x 10 ft. x 10 ft. nets. Is that enough room?

Here is my reasoning;
I'm about 6 ft. tall (72 in.), if the driver is 45 in., that would be 117 in (rounded to 120 in = 10 ft.) So, I don't think I've seen a swing where the club is directly above your head, straight up. Am I correct on my stats here? Am I correct on my reasoning?

Anyone have any experience in setting up indoor hitting nets?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've seen nets 9x7 (the size of the average garage door).

Now, it sounds like you're talking about a cage. I've got a very simple setup in my garage - a 'Big Daddy' 8 foot round net that I weigh down (and have a couple shop rags in front to corral the balls).

So, I think 10x10x10 will be plenty big enough.

Thanks! What ceiling height is your garage? Just curious.

I have three little ones, so a cage is exactly what I was looking for (T-ball, junior golf lessons, soccer, etc.)

Do you think I would be able to stand in the cage and swing a driver without making contact with any of the sides? (10 x 10 x 10) Silly sounding question, but I'm limited on space and trying to figure something out for the winter. Thanks!

Ceiling height is going to be your biggest issue. You have to have enough height available so as not to cramp your full swing getting to the top, and all the way to a finished follow through. I have a 7h X 8w net I use for mid, long irons, and my woods. I also use wedges with it, but only while chipping. I have a bath mat hanging in the center of the netting to take the abuse of the balls hitting it. I don't know of any netting that with in itself can stand the continued abuse a 100+mph golf ball can dish out, ball after ball.

One other thing I forgot to mention. I would advise you to get a piece of synthetic grass, or atleast a piece of medium to long shag carpeting to hit off of. This will help when you get back on on real grass. Hitting off a mat can mask poor impact with the ball GJS

Hi Buck,

I've got a 10' ceiling in the garage. I haven't worked up the courage to swing a driver in there yet... but then again, since I'm grooving a swing, my plan was to hit irons all winter.

It's time to bust out the math. You need (maximum) 90" clearance for a 45" driver, plus whatever length your arms are. The other factor is that you're swinging it at an angle to the ground, so you have to figure out how far away from horizontal you are, too.

GJS makes a good point, too. I hit off a hitting mat while standing on a piece of plywood. Fat hits are noticed immediately (the mat moves a ton).

All good information, and I was thinking about an old quote that I'm sure everyone has heard, "Drive for show, putt for dough!" Of course I will be spending MOST of the time hitting irons and grooving my swing. But it is fun to let loose with the BIG DOG once in a while. Especially in an enclosed area, makes it just that much louder.

Thanks for the input. I think I am going to set this up and see what happens. If I end up having to fix a few holes in the garage ceiling, so be it. It will be worth it.
