full swing

I used to play off 12 about 8 years ago,but gave the game up for family reasons.I did have a very short backswing, people remarked on it,but hit it straight.I have now returned this year and was given a handicap of 24(lot of m8's calling me a bandit)thinking i was going to easily play of this and get down quickly,i find myself struggling to play to 24.I have adopted a fuller swing as i do not want to go back to the ugly swing i had.Should i persevere? And is there any training tips to help me cock my wrists as thats what people keep saying i'm not doing.

Re: full swing

Looks like you'll have to relearn the basics and fundamentals my friend.

Re: full swing

Alex,

Try and get some width in your swing, take the club away low and slow and have a very conscious feeling of getting the hands away from the body and cocking the wrists once you get the club shaft to the horizontal.

Dont rush things just let the swing go back naturally to the top, taking care not to let the clubhead fall over the left shoulder (overswing and loss of clubhead control usually leading to a huge push slice) On the way back down have the feeling of hitting through the ball with your right hand, this should hopefully bring everything back to the ball.

The most important thing to remember is to fully complete the follow through. A lot of people who worry about the backswing totally ignore the follow through because they beleive that not to be the problem.

Bear in mind that the follow through influences the downswing, if you have the intent to complete a full follow through, wrapping the club round yourself at the end, then you will attack the ball much better on the way down.
