Forsomes rules

My playing partner and I had a situation last week which means we are now out of the competition, can you enlighten me on this ruling.

Here goes:

We arrived on the tee for our first foresomes match due to a couple of let downs so we hadn't actually had to play a match (please note), our competitors had played two rounds previous one against the club match secretary and his partner the week before. They walked onto the tee and anounced they had 28 shots combined, we stated only 14 combined, giving them 14 shots, they had a score card and said 7/8s is 12 shots to us. So we agreed and comenced play, needless to say with 4 par threes in their index they thrashed us 5/4.

It has now come to light that the should have played 3/8ths giving them only 5 shots, I think they new this as they had played several matches already and we hadn't although I agree we should have know the rules before play commenced and corrected their claim for 12 shots. They were disqualified and we were declared winners two days later.
Following a complaint from their side a commitee meeting was held and the game given back to them as we should have know the rules before the start of the match and agreed to give them 12 shots at the start so the result stands.

Can anyone enlighten me on the exact ruling for this in my opinion is good old cheating and due to our lack of knowledge they took advantage in what should be a game of etiquite.

As you should know by now you have a HC.

And that HC is secured at the start of play.

If the comp is then played and the team after deducting the 3/8ths difference uses a higher amount of shots than is allocated by the book, bad luck on team that lets them get away with it.

Wrong handicap allowance used in match.

Answer

The Committee should rule that the match stands as played.
The players failed to take note of the conditions of the competition (rule 6-1) and have only themselves to blame.

We all try to learn this game , but it takes very little time to read the rules, before a comp?

Every sympathy but remember, the Conditions of Competition are as important as the Rules of Golf.
