Unconforming club rule

I have a 5 iron that has a little dent in the shaft. I was wandering if this is "unconforming" to the rules? I read the rule book and under rule 4-3c it says a player may use a damaged club prior to the round as long as it conforms to the rules. Well is a little dent in a shaft considered a "damaged" club? Also, what exactly defines "conforms with the rules."

In general is it safe to play with this 5 iron or can I be disqualified?

Re: Unconforming club rule

Unless the damage affects the 'straightness' of the shaft or the dent is substantial or the angle of the head such that the playing characteristics are altered you are ok.
A club that conforms with the rules when new is deemed to conform after wear through normal use.

Hello Liberty 3207,If you refer to APPENDIX II,DESIGN OF CLUBS,At the rear of the rulebook(usually)may be of help.It is though a guide to manufacturers of golf clubs as to what is allowed,or considered to be conforming,as stated in the above appendix. This also supported by Rule 4-1a.(Form and make of clubs.) Hope this helps. Springbok

Re: Unconforming club rule

But Rule 4-1b is the one that matters in this case.

Re: Unconforming club rule

Hello aaa,no problem with that at all.I just got the impression from the latter half of the question as to 'what exactly defines, 'conforms with the rules's,gave me the impression that possibly Liberty 3207 may not have been aware of the requirements laid down by the ruling bodies in the design and manufacture of golf clubs as stipulated in appendix ii. In my opinion this is the basis for what defines 'conforms with the rules', stated in Rule 4. regards, springbok.
