Re: is it legal

No-one has attempted to answer this, but I am very interested to know the correct answer.

I would say using a man made tool to aid alignement is illegal, as would laying anything on the ground for this purpose, however dropping your club does not incure a penalty, even if it falls on your line.

Very good one.

Ian.

Re: is it legal

See here:

http://golf.about.com/od/rulesofgolf...q_alignaid.htm

Quote:
8-2a/1 - Club Placed on Ground to Align Feet
Q. A player places a club on the ground parallel to the line of play to assist him in aligning his feet properly. Is this permissible?
A. Yes, provided the player removes the club before playing his stroke. Otherwise, a breach of Rule 8-2a would occur.

Re: is it legal

What Peter said. I had always thought this was illegal... now I'm going to become the slowest golfer on the course.

Re: is it legal

Here's another idea that should be just as legal as using a club:

Bring a friend and a 200 yard line to the course. Have your friend run ahead with one end of the line to where you want to land and place the other end close to your ball. Align yourself and, when happy, have your friend roll up the line before you take your shot.

That
will probably make your playing partners go ballistic in no time at all!

Re: is it legal

Why doesn't your friend just lay the club down and then remove it for you? - that will save him a long walk back to repeat the exercise when you top it 50 yards

Re: is it legal

A string is so much better: you can see the line the entire distance and you know that it is correct. A club is short and it is harder to see if it is aligned correctly.

I never top the ball 50 yards and neither does anyone else, right?

Just get a friend that likes to run a lot, and you should be OK.
