56" is 16" below the top of your head. How big is your forehead ?

No one can stand perfectly errect and grab a putter and putt. Go get your driver and tape a ruler to it (make it 56 inch total length) and see for your self, you must bend over, when you do you get lower by anywhere from 4 to 8 inch. if not more. Now where is the top of our putter, in your face, thats where. This thread has gone beyond stupid, and I can't believe anyone is even concidering a 56 inch putter. Hell I don't even know why were talking about it, no one is using one, I doubt any one will use one.

Re: Putter Length

No one is using one because there is a gentlemen's agreement on the issue.

It definately IS an advantage, and there is no rule prohibiting it.

Even two club length is 8 inches, less then your foot, pretty minor, and probably not going to help much
My own putter is chest high and it is 50" long (I shortened it from 52"). If I wanted it to be chin high it would need to be 58" and I am just 5'-11". So I imagine some may be 60" long.

These putters are not really more upright - They still have to comply with the rules which dictate no less than a 10 deg inclination. My short 2-Ball putter has the same shaft ange as my long putter - both 10 deg. But, the curvature of the mallet head sole does allow the long putter to be used in a more upright position, if desired.

My driver is about 44" long, I think. Does anyone hit a 48" driver?

So, in my case, the diference is 6" per club length. I doubt that this would provide a major advantage in most drops. That's probably why the R&A/USGA have not bothered adressing the issue.

Well might be true if you stand straight up, but you still need your eyes over the ball, regardless of putter used. I still stand by my statement, no way are you going to get a 56 inch puter not in your face leaning over enough to get your eyes over the ball. Without your eyes over the ball, there is no way to see the line correctly, so I don't see how a long putter could be an advantage. If you learn to get your eyes over the ball/line you probably won't need that goofy long putter in the first place, and if you stop using a 48 inch driver and go back to a 43 1/2 to 45 inch driver like a normal people, you also won't need the two club lengths, because you'll probably be in the fairway...lol..just my opinion.

Of course I am golf purist, I am most diffinately in the Ernie Els camp on these long putters, I feel they should be outlawed. In my mind these thing arre building a stance, because you are introducing a third pivotable point when you anchor them. If we are allowing this, then where does it stop, can I now use a grip reminder, a wrist training aid during play, a pair of shoes with a wedge on the right shoe to stop swaying, etc... the list goes on... I also feel this way about other sports, I think bowler shouldn't be allowed to use them wrist things, football players shouldn't be allowed to use sticky **** on there hands, baseball shouldn't have tar on the bats, and first basemen should wear the same size glove as everyone else. Horse racing shouldn't add weight just because they run faster then the other slowass horses. Nascar should get rid of restricter plates. And finally a PUTTER should be the shortest club in the bag.

Hey Gonavy - I assume you were adressing me?

Get your eyes over my message and you will find that my putter is 50" and my height is 71" - Putter comes to my chest when lining up the ball. And..... I said my driver was 44", not 48"!! Two club lengths - Heck no, I only take one - Free drop from middle of fairway sprinkler heads

Hey I agree - getting your eyes in the right place IS important!!

PS: In baseball I don't think anyone except catcher should wear a glove - In cricket ( a game the play other side of pond) only wicket keeper (catcher) has gloves.

Apologies, wasn't singling you out specifically, just ranting on this thread in general. I agree cricket seems a little tougher then our baseball, which reminds me, they need to stop that DH garbage too, if them idiots are getting millions of dollars, they should hit thier own dam ball, and Tiger needs to chill out on getting upset if someone scratches while he is swinging, he gets a gazillion dollars a year, he needs to shut up, and just play. Baseball players hit a moving ball with thousand of people screaming, how come these pros freak out when some one adjust thier shirt from 200 yds away..because it's in thier eye line...jeeezzz....shutup, just hit the ball...lol
