Playing etiquette

Recently my wife and I were playing at a local course and we were following a foursome and then another twosome. After completing 9 holes the foursome went into the club house and took a break, the twosome also disappeared into the club house. We waited for approximately 10 minutes and then began the back 9.

As we tee'ed off the foursome appreared and lined up behind us. I asked the one of the persons in the foursome if it was ok with them that we decided to play through and they all said it was ok with them.

After we tee'ed off and were about to walk the fairway for our follow up shots the twosome also appeared and were angry because we had tee'ed off before them. One of them said we couldn't tee off before them and they were waiting for the foursome to finish their break so they could tee off.

My question is were we obligated to wait for both the foursome and the twosome to finish their breaks before we tee'ed off? Remember we waited for 10 minutes before we decided to go a head.

Re: Playing etiquette

Of course Rule 6-8 says that players must not discontinue play anyway.
But given this was social golf the rules are often an irrelevance.

If a group take time out they should expect that others may not want to and have the courtesy to allow them through.

Re: Playing etiquette

In competiton golf yes.. allways wait.. if theyre taking too long talk too someone with authority and ask them too do something about it, they may disqualify them... however social golf I would have gone straight onto the back nine... You snooze you lose.

Re: Playing etiquette

I would of played through as well. I'd assume they were letting us play through if they were gone longer than it takes to get a refreshment.

Re: Playing etiquette

Firstly i would have not waited 10 mins in the first place. as that could have caused a hold up and also you are not meant to walk off the course for a quick break and then carry on as 'aaa' said. I think it was disgraceful that the 2ball were argueing about this as they should not have stopped and it was their own fault

Re: Playing etiquette

You were right to continue playing. At most courses, anyone stopping between nines forfeits their place. They should also not be interferring with the continuation of any groups coming behind them.

Re: Playing etiquette

You know I thought I was right to continue since they decided to take a break, when the two people that were in front of us showed up, (man and woman) the man didnt say anything but the woman threw a "fit" she started saying " you cant do that, did you get the ok from the club house?" when I told her I didn't believe we had to wait if the foursome decided to take a break and she replied "of coarse you do, what do you think we were waiting for?" I would have asked the two of them to join us but my wife gave me a "don't even think about it" look, so we tee'ed off and played on.

Re: Playing etiquette

Gman,

You did the right thing, infact, two things right. Firstly, by playing through and secondly, listening to your wife and not asking the twosome to join you .

Cheers

Re: Playing etiquette

It only makes sense that if you stop to eat/pee/drink, whatever, that the people behind you either:

a) choose to stop to eat/pee/drink, whatever

or

b) tee off

Normally if they're playing through, they'll leave their bags by the tee while they duck in to relieve themselves quickly, or they'll leave someone on the tee as a placeholder.

But if a foursome disappears, and there's no bags on the tee, I play.

Re: Playing etiquette

Both the two-somes were at fault. They had "women" on the golf course.

Rut roh, there are many ladies that I prefer to see in front of me on ourgolf course. Not only are they more attractive, they play quicker than many men at our course.

I didn't know that there where any Michelle Wie wannabes monitoring these threads. mea culpa

Hello general rule is that u should not dis contienue play if one does the groups behind have the right to play through.
