Just quickly - although the ball may not be OB, it may be unplayable.

An unplayable ball is judged solely by the player. Under the penalty of 1 stroke, he may:

a) Drop a ball within 2 clublengths, no nearer the hole.
b) Drop the ball on a line between the current ball location and the pin, as far back as he wants, no nearer the hole.
c) Replay the shot from as close to the original location as possible.

Please note, that if the player is in a hazard and elects option a or b, he must keep his ball in the hazard.

A new highlight: Golfing the home course on Christmas Day.

I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.

For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.

Re: provisional ball!

Ok, so I'm not sure if I have missed something in the thread, but if you hit a provisional but find your original, and you play your original, do the shots that you played with the provisional count towards your score, or do you ignore those shots completely? Rule 27-2c note: "If a player plays a provisional ball under Rule 27-2a, the strokes made after this Rule has been invoked with a
provisional ball subsequently abandoned under Rule 27-2c and penalty strokes incurred solely by playing that ball are disregarded." What does that all mean.

Thanks for your input.

Re: provisional ball!

Milleniumcow,

No, if you find and play your original, it's as if the provisional was never played at all.

The subsequent rules that you cite indicate that if you incur penalties with your provisional, they are also thrown out when the provisional is thrown out.

Case in point:

I tee one up and slice it towards a muddy field.

I play a provisional (now hitting 4)

I slice it towards the same muddy field.

I play a provisional (now hitting 6)

I slice it towards the same muddy field.

I play a provisional (now hitting 8)

I put it in the lake (short of my original ball).

I drop, and hit another (now hitting 10).

It finds the fairway.

I move up, and find my original ball in the muddy field.

I'm lying 1, hitting 2.

Re: provisional ball!

Man, that's one chronic slice you got going there LP...

Going for lessons anytime soon...???

Seriously though, I have seen a guy do pretty much as you described, except substitue "hooked it badly over the fence and OOB" for "sliced it towards a muddy field". 4 provisional balls also badly hooked over the fence, 5th provisional ball down the centre. When we walk up and have a quick look for the over the fence balls, we find his original ball sitting in bounds and playable.

The golfing gods smiled on him that day, with his next shot he fashions a shot that got him within 20m of the green and then he proceeded to hole out with his 3rd for a birdie. You can only imagine his joy.

He went on to win the comp of the day, shooting a net 65 I think. And yes, he did buy the first two rounds in the clubhouse afterwards...

Cheers

Re: provisional ball!

Funny you should ask.

In 6 weeks I'm heading to see a coach for a complete overhaul (save my putting). Short game and full swing.

I'm sick of bandaids... time for a new solution.
