Slow Play / Hitting into people

With that kind of thinking the offendor would have a multitude of problems as soon as he hit me or someoneone in my party. A golf ball could be construed as a lethal weapon. Minimum charge aggravated assault, if not prosecutable, meet my attorney to discuss settlement of damages caused by your negligence! I have never seen anyone carry a ball over someones head. I have seen balls bounce and roll past a group. Even that is unacceptable, but mistakes can happen.

Pensacola:im in Bham and played Eagle Point many times..anyway..today my wife and i played another Bham course and slow play really got me irritated as well.The threesome ahead were very inexperienced players as they were all over the place..now thats fine but at least have enough regard for the people behind who are faster than you to allow them to play thru.If their slow play wasnt bad enough..they would get to their ball and just stare at the green for minutes on end like something was gonna change...that is when they werent just walking back and forth in the fairway while talking on their cell phone.Man i about lost it!!!I have had plenty run ins before on the course with face to face confrontations while being on both ends of this matter...but my wife just says to be patient and wait..im sorry but this kind of **** needs to be corrected in one way or another.I had a great round going with a birdie/par start and just lost my game due to this anger that was building inside of me.They finally left after 14th hole and i proceeded to finish off an 85 round (that coulda been an easy 79 with no distractions)with four straight pars on the last four holes.Do you think they ruined my game today?Yes i think so...Now Tigress i want to know what happened after you lost it and lit out after the guy who tossed your ball off the green.David

I was playing a round with my brother and a friend of mine a few years back. We were waiting for a group ahead of us on pretty much every hole, but, no one got upset. We were just out to have a good, relaxing time. Of course, that slowed us down so the group behind us was also waiting. One guy in particular in the group behind us kept driving his ball before we were at a safe distance. We gave the normal gentlemanly warning a couple of times but he kept on every hole driving the ball too close. Typical a**hole. We calmly used the footwedge and kicked one of his balls into a lovely sandtrap while he wasn't looking then stood on the green and watched him take 3 shots to get out. Two holes later, my friend is setting up for his second shot while my brother stood off to one side waiting, arms crossed, feet spread a little. To our surprise a ball bounces right between his feet. I watched his face turn red and that little tic in his eye start as the anger built. He didn't lose his temper, however, he just reached into his bag and pulled out a tee and his Great Big Bertha driver, teed that ball up and drove it back to the tee box. You should have seen those guys diving out of the way. Probably not the best method of taking care of impatient a**holes, but, for the rest of the round none of their balls came within 50 yard of us.

Hey David -

I have some buddies in Memphis, TN and I'm in Pensacola, FL. We have recently started making trips to Bham for golf weekends as it's fairly central to out locations. And there seems to be an abundance of decent courses in the area. Last time we played Highland Park and Eagle Point. I'm leaving Satuday morning for a round at Highland Park and catching the Memphis-UAB football game Sat night. We are playing Sunday as well. Possibly at Highland again as we are staying near there. Can you make any suggestions about other area courses in the $65 range that are in the Highland Park area. We weren't too excited about Eagle Pointe and won't likely continue playing there. Any suggestions are appreciated. Only a handful of the area courses have websites and I'd hate to drive so far to play a horrible course.

Hi Mitch:Oak Mountain State Park is as nice as any in the area right now.They renovated it bout 3 years back and man is it nice now!!The fairways and greens are outstanding.Green fees with kart on w/e is 32 dollars.Which is very reasonable for the caliber of this course now.Other courses are Cumberland Lakes in Pinson area.Fairways and greens outstanding there as well.Green fees on w/e is 35.00..Trussville Country Club in Trussville is pretty nice..$37.00 on w/e...Mountain View is pretty decent in Graysville-..36.00 on w/e with kart..well theres a few for ya.Let me know if ya need a fourth..hehe.-David

I fully understand that if you are keeping up with the group in front then there are no excuses. But if you aren't letting a quicker group through then its your own faults. Im not saying that it is right to hit balls when people are still within range but surely people can understand people behind getting frustrated when they want to play golf at their own pace and cant because some **** in front of them is hacking around and doesnt care about whats behind them.
As for saying 4-5 hrs to complete a round - I think there is a different etiquette in the UK to US. I would expect a round to be completed in max 4 1/2 hrs but know that if you get a four ball of americans in front of you it is likely to be slow (sorry for the generalisation but having played in St andrews for 4 years its true and the Japanese are even worse!)
I think its a case of respecting the country/ course you are playing - most courses have recommended times and if you arent keeping up with the group un front and you have a group behind you - let them through - no one would think the worse of you for doing it.
TO make my point - I was once let through by a slow group on 13th of the Old Course and it wasnt till we'd driven past them that we realised it was Seve - if he can let people through than so can everyone else!

Hey Spankit. We did go to B'ham. Due to time constraints and last minute plans we ended up just playing Highland Park both days. I'm really dissapointed with the greens there. They are in absolutely horrible shape. But I enjoyed the course. I shoot 85-95 depending on how things are working out, so I don't mind the shorter courses. It builds confidence. My buddy and I played best ball as he would shoot about 120 if left to play his own ball. We shot 91 the first day (sad I know) and 79 on Sunday. It's almost like playing alone. My ball is played about 90 percent of the time. I wish we'd played individually on Sunday as I feel like it might have been one of my best rounds ever. I'm bored so I'll give you something to read. I imagine you've been there at least once.

Starting everyone on number 10.

10. Par 4 365 Yards - Starter says it's 260 to the water. It doesn't look nearly that far. I avg 225. I'm more accurate with driver than any club in the bag. Doesn't make sense, but that's how it goes. I decide to hit a little draw and take a nice relaxed swing. I catch it absolutely perfect and roll through the fairway 10 feet from the water. Got what I guessed to be about 100 to center of green. Hit a horrible pitching wedge to bunker on right side. Play a decent sand shot. Two putt for bogey. +1

11. Par 3 179 Yards - 5 Iron about 165. Didn't catch it flush. Well short of green but dead center. Horrible pitch. Parter gets within 10 feet. We play his ball. He misses putt, but I make it. Par. +1

12. Par 5 485 Yards - Partner in the weeds. I hit a solid drive. Didn't get all of it, but goes about 215. I attempt to kill a 3 wood with a very poor result. Still don't know where the ball is. Partner lays up about to 150. We both hit nice 6 irons onto the green. Three putt Bogey +2

13. Par 3 89 Yards - I havn't hit this green in three rounds. I miss to the right. Partner off the left edge. Play his ball. Up and down for par. +2

14. Par 4 252 Yards - Way uphill. Probably 40 ft climb. Bunkers at top of hill. Hidden green on other side. Beautiful drive over the hill. Just off left edge of green. Pitch within 10 feet and two putt for par. +3

15. Pat 4 287 Yards - Back down the hill. Drive the ball pin high about 30 feet right of the green. Have to pitch off a slope over a bunker with pin only about 15 feet from the edge. Try to get cute out of thick rough and don't make the green. Try again and hit it well past hole. 3 Putt Double Bogey +5

16. Par 4 324 Yards - Severe uphill again. Got under the ball and skyed it. Only drove about 180. 125 to the hole plus a bit uphill. 8 Iron just short of green. Beautiful chip to 4 feet. Par +5

17. Par 3 106 Yards - I hit a nice PW to 15 feet. 2 Putt Par +5

18. Par 4 361 - Fairway well below tee boxes. Skyed the driver a bit again. But about 230 total. 130 to green back uphill a bit. 8 Iron about 10 yards short of green. Bladed the PW and sent ball over green. Pitched back to 12 feet. Two putt Double. +7

Not feeling so good right now. Partner contributed about 3 shots in all.

Off to number 1.

1. Par 4 291 Severe downhill. Hit pin high 30 feet right of the green. Nice pitch. One Putt for birdie. -1 (+6 overall)

2. Par 5 443 - Nice Driver 250. 185ish to the green. Tried to hit a 5wood and topped the ball horribly. Partner hits a nice 5 iron leaving about 30 yards to green. Nice pitch. I miss birdie putt put partner holes it. -2 (+5 overall)

3. Par 3 106 - Two horrible tee shots. We play my ball from about 25 yards short and right of green. Beautiful shot to about 10 feet. Par putt. -2 (+5 Overall)

4. Par 4 363 - Booming drive. Best of the day. Either the yardages are wrong or I killed it. Cause we only had 85 to the green making the drive 270ish total. 3/4 PW to six feet. Birdie putt. My best hole on the day. -3 (+4 overall)

5. Par 3 178 Water from 145-165. Five iron to front bunker. Dead straight. Two more yards and it would've been perfect. Partner hits much worse shot, but clears the water and had a better shot to flag so we play his ball. Pitch and two putt for bogey. -2 (+5 Overall)

Basically we bogey 6-9 with less than spectacular play to end up +9.

Had a great time with a great friend though. Hopefully he will be improved enough soon to feel comfortable playing on his own.

We seem to have a severe case of thread worm here.

Hmmm. After yelling at him about accepting the fact that accidents do happen, I then informed him about the dress code. After some back and forth, he stated that he didn't want to play in front of a maniac. I confirmed with him that he 'must be inviting us to play through'. Subsequently, I stomped to the next tee and proceed to hit my ball about 20 yards into the swamp! I didn't dare look at my playing partners, because I knew that by this point they were ready to roll on the ground and howl with laughter.
