Did I do the correct thing?

Hi Guys,

I have been playing in a friendly game with someone from my club and it was very enjoyable but my only concern was that my partner for I would say about 60 % of the time got my score wrong and kept on decreasing my strokes. Now I thought once was genuine fault but for nearly 14 holes he tried to lower my score.
Do you reckon he was doinging it out of kindness or was he testing me. I did keep an eye on my own score as well and told him on certain holes that I actually got more than what he thought which didn't seem to bother him (mind you doing a 96 is not good).
Do you reckon I should of agreed with him and got a lower score because I felt I was only cheating my self if I didn't get that figure.

In a friendly game it doesnt *really* matter that much but I would still count everyshot, that said in a friendly afteroon game we would often not count some penalties (putting into the flag, moved ball etc)

In comp play you count every single shot; stroke, penalty or otherwise.

The card wouldnt matter to me unless I was using it to establish a handicap. You know what you shot. I prolly would have said something like " Hey man I got a 6 and not a 5 on that last hole." If he kept doing it after that I probably wouldnt play with him anymore. Im kinda picky on who I play with anyway. I dont need the distraction of him jacking up the scorecard.

Yesterday I had to count the worst stroke I have ever counted.

It was quite windy and I was on an elevated green.

After lining up my putt, I addressed the ball, and it suddenly started to move because of a gust of wind.

I knew the very second it happened that I had to count it as a stroke ... it was painful.

At least I drained the putt, but still ...

I threw the ball in the pond afterwards. That should teach it!

I still don't understand people who insist on breaking the rules. The rules are part of the game. If you can't cope with the rules why bother playing ?

Do you play poker/snakes and ladders/checkers and break the rules ?

Who says insist?
Im not in a competition I am having a practice round with my friends.

If you are playing a game of snooker with a friend and he bumps the ball with his hand do you call foul everytime?
If someone steps over the foul line duing a game of bowling do you call foul here too?

I'll bet any kids you might have just love playing games with Daddy...

Well, yeah, in every one of your examples, I would. Playing with children would be a question (for me) of their development and state in the game - I would not wish to demoralise them beyond the point of wishing to learn, but in general, yes, they too should know what is and what is not allowed as soon as possible.

It's the same as driving (ie; car). I might not agree with every single rule, but that's not up to me. My responsibility is to stick to the same rules as everyone else.

I dont disagree with this, but its also a game played by the vast majority for enjoyment, you dont have to be "on" all the time.

I totally disagree that its the same as driving a car, I dont have the potential to kill someone by hitting a second pitch to a green because I fluffed the first one and want to prove to myself that I can.

Yeah, ok, bad analogy - what I meant was it's not for me to call which rules are valid and which aren't. I don't think 'cafeteria golf' (picking and choosingwhich bits to follow) is fair or valid.

but fair implies (at least to me) that there is someone else you are being unfair towards. I dont condone cheating in a competiiton under any circumstances.
I saying that hitting an extra putt or chip etc when you are having a friendly round with your friends is not a problem unless one of your friends has a problem with it.
