Chipping while on the green

My son and I were talking today and I told him that I saw somebody hit a pitch shot while they were on the green....instead of putting, He says you can not do that....I said I disagree

Who is right?

You are. You could use your driver on the green.

However, you risk the wrath of the greenskeeper.

On very long putts, I have in the past used a 7 iron to chip the ball.

As Lowpost says - be careful not to damage green. Not only will the greenkeeper be p****d off, other players won't be too happy either.

I've used a SW - when the green was shaped in such a way as there was my ball, a grass bank and then the hole - couldn't really putt over the bank; must admit I was more worried about the green than of 3 putting but got away with it on both counts.

play St Andrews and you could have a 120 yard putt and need to use an iron to even get close to the hole but like lowpost says do not damage the green and if you feel you cant chip without taking a divot then your better hitting two long putts.

Have some vague memory of (I think it was) Phil Mickelson doing this in a Tour event some years ago. Kidney shaped green, direct route to hole from ball position was off green thru greenside grass bunker and back on to green or an indirect route of 2 or more probably 3 putts. Phil being phil, he took his 64° lob and promptly knocked that famous flop of his to about 6 feet.

Bottom line, yes, you can do what you like wherever you feel your skills and abilities will allow. BUT, best you be very familiar with these skills of yours, as all have said before me, don't be taking a divot.
