Up and Down

I've heard the term Up & Down for years, but still haven't been able to pinpoint exactly what it means.

My best guess to scoring an up and down is being close to the pin (~3 feet) and not having to deal with a break, due to being so close. You just run the putter up and down, take your ball out of the cup, and head to the next tee.

Am I right? Wrong? Close?

Up and Down simply means:

You miss the green with your second shot (par 4) third shot (par 5) and you get the ball onto the green and in the hole in two shots i.e up and down in two saving par.

So then Up & Down is just another term for a Par Save? (Par save being defined as missing GIR but still making par).

Up and Down does not mean saving par, it means: when you miss a green you get the ball in the hole in two shots i.e "up and down in two". Which you may find is not always easy!!!!
I have looked at your personal file and it shows you have a 42 h/cap is this the case in Canada, in the UK we start at 28 for men.????

So then you can get an up and down and shoot, say, a double bogey? Or is up and down also known as a grass save?

My hcap was generated from an online generator... in other words, I shoot roughly 165.

Answer to your doudle bogey question is yes.

If you are shooting around 165 per round on a 18 hole golf course, you must be getting up and down in 10.

I suggest you have a good look at this site and start practicing for that up and down in 2!!!!

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I usually get up and down (I average 2.5 putts per hole).

If you have 2.5 putts per round = 45 shots

18 tee shots = 18 shots

this leaves you 102 shots = 5 fairway shots per hole including par 3s

If you want to get your score down very quickly to a 28 handycapp I suggest you take a three wood, and an 8 iron down to sand wedge out only for a week or two.

Tee off with the three wood and don't hit anything longer than an 8 iron. This will help get some consistency with your shots and certainly reduce the amount of shots between tee and green.

I finally understand up and down.

Up - getting a shot onto the green.

Down - putting your putt in the cup.

Therefore, getting up and down means getting on the green and making your first putt.

Ian, do you have to have missed the GIR?

An up and down usually refers to a chip and a one putt. Hitting the green from 225 out on a par 5 and sinking the putt wouldn't normally be viewed as an up and down. On the otherhand, if you put your drive close to the green on a par 4, your chip and one putt would be considered an up and down.

GIR is "Greens in Regulation"

For example on a par four you have to hit the green in two and par five in three to have a perfect GIR, if you miss the green you will need to get "UP AND DOWN" to save par.

Don't worry to much, it is only there for pundit stats really. It may however help your game if you consentrate on your GIR per round to help improve your game.

OK... so a chip and one putt for up and down. Cool.

So if you drive close to the green on a short par 4, you can get up and down for birdie.

Just to add to Ian's last post - a general rule for greens in regulation: The way they come up with GIR is that on each hole you should have 2 putts, so the GIR is par on that hole minus 2 (the amount of putts you should have.) Therefore, on a par 3, your first shot must be on the green to be on in regulation.
