Shagging

Bob Rotella uses it in a very different way to the context I know it from; "I shagged for Ben Hogan." What is shagging/what are/were shag caddies? I'm 99% sure he doesn't mean what I think he means...

While I'm "at it" *snigger*, what's the difference between a flop shot and a pitch?

Re: Shagging

Q1. It means to pick up balls.

Shagging balls - to hit a bunch of balls and then pick them up.

Shag bag - a special bag for shagging balls with.

I have heard of Hogan's "shag mentality" meaning he only hit 23 balls in a row and then went and "shagged" them before hitting another 23.

It's a typical American thing, to unwittingly take a word that is rude elsewhere and give it another meaning. I nearly spit my Coca Cola when I heard someone referring to a "fanny pack" in Florida.

Q2. A flop is a shot hit with a wide open face with the intention of hitting the ball nice and high but only a short distance. Phil Mickelson is a master at this.

A Pitch is a longer shot hit with a square face, usually played to carry most of the way to the green/hole.

One would typically play a flop when in deep rough near the green, a pitch when trying to carry a bunker or pond near a green.

There is also the bump and run, a longer chip shot used when there are no visable hazards and the ground is hard, designed to spend little time in the air and then run the rest of the way to the green.

Hope this helps.

Re: Shagging

Yes, I have had a few near misses with the conversion of USA to English and English to USA. I was quite interested in an advert for a "Fanny Lifter" Turned out it was for a buttock firming exercise machine! what a let down.

Yes Ian, I understand the confusion with the "shag bag" Phew! I have some fond memories of youth there . In Golf, It is one of these pump type devices to pickup golf balls from the practice range though, guess I enjoyed the former more.

Flop shot, this is a short high shot that lands and stops quickly. Works well where the ball is sat up in the rough near a raised green or where there is a bunker between you and the green. Normally played with a lob wedge or sand iron but beware when on a hard lie or near the club house windows.

Re: Shagging

Then I'm sure you fellas will enjoy the new shag stick.

While at a glance it seems innocuous enough, but when one considers it has the capacity to release 28 times, it's pretty good at what it does.

I love some of the dialect peculiarities between all of us who speak English.

Re: Shagging

Almost too embarrased to admit that on those rare occasions when I venture to the range at the course before a round, I will usually shag for myself...

Cheers

Re: Shagging

What is it with North America? I saw a commercial (advert) on the TV the other night for an insurance company and some insurance guy sits there and says (with a straight face), "I WILL follow through". I definitely did spit my mouthful of tea all over the place.

There is also a fast food outlet in the USA called Kenny Rogers Chicken, I said to them "Does he?" but got a blank look. Priceless.
