Correct right hand placement
Correct right hand placement

Correct right hand placement

To add on the previous post on left hands position, so many people can mange to correctly place the left hand, just to ruin it by a faulty right hand position. Many people fail to understand the right hands critical role in supporting the club, they get the fingers very close together, this provides no support, and encourages a hitting action with the right. What you should do is try to spread the fingers out on the club, ESPECIALLY the forefinger (trigger finger), there should be a big gap here between the forefinger and middle finger. This provides much more support.

To illustrate the support I am talking about, take your grip with the fingers of the right hand close together, and stand straight up, like you were talking to someone, allow your arms to fall down on the chest, and relax everything, notice the club shaft will drop below horizontal to the ground, not good. Now try it with the fingers spread, gap with forefinger, the club will be parallel to the ground, and stay that way no matter how relaxed, or loosely you grip, this is the support you are looking for when holding a club, this puts the shaft at a ninety degree angle to your spine. When you bend over and address the ball and during the swing your angles will be much better.

Re: Correct right hand placement

For those of you that don't realize that your fingers are one of the biggest factors in club head speed and feel, just do it and get comfortable. you will be amazed if you have any talent.

Don't recall saying that you must agree, but lets keep in mind, what one player does and makes work is not necessarily good as a general rule. John Daly swings way way past parallel, but I wouldn't recommend everyone do that type of swing. You will find that the majority of professional and low handicap golfer do have the gap between the forefinger and middle finger of the left hand grip. My article simply points that out and gives a reason for it. Use it don't use it, really not the point. Every golf swing instruction is useful to only some, nothing works for everyone, or there would only be ONE way to swing.

You can find evidents to disprove every single golf instruction ever given, is that helpful, doubtful.

Lightbulb Re: Correct right hand placement

I Tried this tip and felt like I had good control of the club head. I liked it!
I had beeb creating space between my index finger and thumb but added some space between the other fingers on the right hand.

People swing it different, but fundamentals like the grip are not negotiable.

Your post advocates spreading ALL the fingers of the right hand and having a BIG gap between middle and forefinger. The example of support using spread fingers not allowing the club to drop to the grond is a weird one too, because the ball is on the ground, so the club needs to go down, not be held up in the air.

Spread fingers is weak, doesn't allow for clubhead feel and top speed, and is the fastest way to callus all your fingers.
