Re: My shank thread

AH!

Just to try and sum things up it seems to me I have been throwing(moving) my hands at the ball not the clubhead.......This might of been said already and if so, I appoligize.

Any believer's in this being a cause to my problems?

Sure would suck if it was as simple that.

My immediate thoughts:

If your hands are moving away from you then the clubhead will be at some stage too. So it's a possibility.

I still stand by my last post though. With the circular motion of the swing, it would be an odd (and probably near impossible) move to voluntarily move your hands out toward the ball without there being a reason to do so (something being in the way of your hands and arms following the desired path).

Re: My shank thread

The latest,

I could very well possibly be thrusting my right hip out on the downswing, possibly bringing everything to much from the inside (which was mentioned) I caught myself today doing that....Could be dropping the right shoulder to much or coming up and out of it. What is the difference?

I sure felt my right hip pushing out.......Kinda like sucking your a** in at impact. I know that can't be right.

What's up?

Morning!

A video at this point would reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally help.

Getting your hips forward as you describe above is a good thing, but not if it's done too early.

Once your hands have gone past your crotch, the dynamic of the swing means that your hips will "thrust" toward the target. It's what keeps the clubhead extending a little past the ball and tilts the spine axis. It's why all good ball strikers have a little move away from the target with their head at impact.

Do it too early and your hands have to go round your outward-bound hips and the ball could go anywhere. It'll result in everything unwinding too early and you'll dump the shaft off leading to pulls, slices, shanks, tops etc. You name it, it'll happen.

I feel your pain! A video would be grand as we could be guessing for 20 years, which doesn't help you much!

Re: My shank thread

You're hidding the clubface behind the hosel, mark a circle
on the sweetspot of the wedge. For a pitch, face the ball going
back drag the handle like a mop using you're pivot.
On a chip, take the club waist high parallel to the ground
add some wrist cock, grip pointing to flight line, clubhead
above right shoulder,monitor the sweetspot.
Full shots you're ott throwing the arms off you're torso.
Culprit pitch over rotating the left forearm, chip laying
off the shaft and over rotating the left forearm from inside.
Full shots left forearm dosen't drop to the inside and have
a chance to rotate square to impact.
Just my Guesses?

Re: My shank thread

Dear Golfndawg,

I had the same problem about 2 years ago. I was intent on figuring it out myself. I made a few notes of the things that really helped. Here they are:

My Personal hints:
  • FULL SHOULDER TURN
  • Keep hands low
  • Left arm straight at impact (Avoid chicken wing position at all cost)
  • Stand far enough away from ball
  • Reach up with hands in the backswing
  • Minimize hip movement, ESPECIALLY any lateral movement
  • LOW AND SLOW ON THE TAKEAWAY AND IN A STRAIGHT LINE!!!
  • Shorten the backswing a bit

You never know, maybe one of them holds the key for you.

I found the two that help most was making sure not to chicken wing your left arm at impact and making a full shoulder turn.

Good luck, bro....

Chessbum....

Re: My shank thread

YEEHAW

Had my lesson today and we worked on some very simple things, like standing a bit taller and being able to rotate the body and keeping the hands more in front of the chest, bad thing or maybe good thing is I didn't shank any while warming up in front of him.....All is good and looking forward to playing again and getting down into the low digits.

Well done Dawg

That cloud of hosel-related misery will soon lift.

Re: My shank thread

Thanks man, Funny thing how we think we're doing the things that we see on instructional video's or forum's or reading or whatever, and just to be somewhat close to it.

I believe I have a repeatable swing NOW!!!!!!!!!

THINKING IS GONE FOR THE MOMENT and I am sure it will be for now on.....

Thanks for all the inputs and maybe we can put this ugly thread to rest
