Divot ?

I am a 14 handicap(have been playing for 4 years). I almost never seem to make divots(except with PW or when I hit well before the ball(shoulder drop ?) and the ball goes 1/2 the distance). Is that OK to not take divots ? I hit decent distance with my irons...(7 Iron for 160). I hear everyone talking about taking divots. I see people fixing 'big' patches of grass. What are your thoughts ?

I'm the same way. I only take a divot if I hit it fat. Nicholas never took much of a divot and I think he hit the ball ok now and then :-)

To Divot or Not to Divot that is the question.

A few things come into play, ground hardness. In Louisiana, we have hardpan. You can hit it hard and get a little dust ball. I recently played in Pensacola, Florida. The ground was much softer an took a few monster divots.

That's one factor, the other is the angle of desent into the ball. Not wanting to pick on shorter people, but the angle of attack to the ball is shallower. Golfers with a rounder swing are shallower on the angle and usually have shallower divots. Nothing wrong with that as long as they look like bacon strips and not letter c's.

Conversely, taller golfer's usually have a steeper angle and gunshot the ball. The divot looks more like a small explosion. On soft courses you can dig a small garden.

Which ever you do, hit the ball first!!!

The pain of a Par3 hole.
Every Par3 on my course have major divots in the Tees... well, the white tees anyway.

One explination I was told was that people like to put more spin on the ball and stop it from rolling into bunkers, or into the rough. My reply was "Why not use a loftier club then"?

The ground here in Mid Florida is mostly sand, so Divots are easily created.
You should see some of the "bunkers" appering in the driving range tees! LOL
