| Ball choice for 3 skills I played in a comp on Sunday. I was using a Noodle ball. I was using the 3sk and on my shots, I was imagining the ball starting off right and drawing in and it worked great. I was hitting most greens magic with my approach shots. Today I went out and only had Dunlop DDH balls with me. I used the same method of imagining the ball starting right and drifting back in. However, this did not happen at all, not once. All of them kept going on the line that I imagined and stayed straight. I ended up in lots of greenside bunkers on the right. So, my question is (as I wont get a chance to test this until next weekend) Was it because of the choice of ball that I got this effect or is it more likely it was just me? Brian |

| Re: Ball choice for 3 skills Hi Miffin, You certainly don't get consistancy from cheap balls, pro v1s for instance are softer and you will get a better flight, by applying 3SKs you need spin on the ball, this is more difficult with a cheap one. If you can go for a good quality ball or nearest to it depending on budget. Which ever you do, it will improve your game if you stick to one ball. Ian. |

| Re: Ball choice for 3 skills Thanks. Couple more questions though, that I forgot last time. Is the Noodle not good enough? Also are all v1's the same or is there higher spin \ longer distance ones. I have some v1's in the cupboard and could soon pull them out. But I also have some more Noodles in there too. |

| Re: Ball choice for 3 skills hi when i use to hit the ball with a draw as me bread and butter shot i fond the Titleist worked best for me. but when i changed to using a fade every day i found that the titleist did not work so well and i happened to find a good topflight and that seemed to work great with my swing and now i only use topflight as i know what they will do in the air. i think you really need to try a few diffrent types of ball to find the one that works for you, it don't have to be the best balls or the most expensive. even try a few xxx outs of diffrent makes and if one works then get a packet of balls and see how they go. if there was one best ball then all the pros would use no mater what they were paid as a ball that works with your swing will save you shots. cheers bill

| Re: Ball choice for 3 skills That is an eye opener for me. I never knew that. I knew that you could get harder and softer type balls giving a bit more spin or a bit more distance. I didn't consider that they could react differently in other ways. Next time out, I will take my V1's and my Noodles and see what happens. |

| Re: Ball choice for 3 skills hi i think it has to do with the way you apply spin to the ball and the type and number of dimples on the ball. some balls are low spin and they don't tell you that and some are distance balls and again have low spin but only say distance on the box. think its about trying it out but try and get a new ball to try as older balls sometimes do strange things when the cover wears a little. cheers bill |

| Re: Ball choice for 3 skills This is what I found. The great majority of low quality and low price balls have a hard surlyn cover. This type of material is slippery compared to other materials. A slippery surface will not stick as much to the face of the club when it strikes it. So it will not spin the ball as much as with other high quality balls. The great majority of high quality and high price balls have a soft urethane cover. Urethane is much softer than surlyn and stickier. It sticks better to the face so when the club strikes it, it spins the ball more than with other low quality balls. The number and shape of dimples makes little difference at this point. As long as the number of dimples is between 200 and 800, it should fly just as well and just as far. The shape varies little between ball brand and model. Ball makers know what works and what doesn't. They all do. A side note. If I remember correctly, Titleist is owned by Accushnet. And Accushnet also owns Top-Flite. It would be very stupid of Accushnet to make a Top-Flite ball that competes directly with their ProV1. Thus we don't see any high quality Top-Flite ball anywhere on this Earth. I think it's the same situation with Callaway and Max-Fli or some other two brands. In my opinion, the ProV1 is the best ball there is. Also in my opinion, it costs no more to make the ProV1 than it does to make the Top-Flite Uber Distance Mucho Spin Mofo ball. So Titleist could, if they so chose, make only ProV1s and sell it just as cheap as any other model. But obviously, they don't choose that. Instead, I think they prefer to maintain the current price/model structure regardless of how artificial it looks. But for what reason, I wouldn't know.

| Re: Ball choice for 3 skills hi Martin Callaway took over Topflight a few years ago (2003) and both factory's are still running as far as i was lead to believe, but now Callaway are the owners. topflight do 3 ranges of balls the D2, XL3000 and the XL. and there is a mixture of low spin or distance and soft feel balls. as to dimples, the can make a difference if you want a high fligh ball or a low flight ball, dunlop made a great low flight balls a few years ago and I'm not sure if it was the ddh with the dimples in a hex. cheers bill
