Question Should I change the Grip ?

Hi,

I have been playing this game for 4 years now....my handicap is 14(down from 20 from start of year). From the begining I have had a 10 finger grip(no formal training, 'Cricket' grip took over). I was thinking about taking my first lesson(from a Pro.) and the first thing he remarked is to change the 'Grip'. He wants to see an InterLock or OverLock kind. I am hesitent to change - Change is always tough. I have a devent swing, hit reasonable distance with Irons...(7I - 155-160 Yards) but short game is my problem, more so with Putting and more specifically reading Greens!!

Will changing grips dive me any advantage ? I have tried other grips but they make me feel like I can't feel the club ?

Thanks,

Ranga

10 finger grips are uncommon. No one uses them on the tour because if you have to know, taking the pinky of the right hand off the club makes the right hand 25% less dominate. If the right hands gets over active, you get a lot of spraying left and right...harder to control. So the normal is to do an overlap.

I have seen great players with a 10 finger. It's all in your head. When you talk about the short game and putting...this become irrevelant. The grip on putting is so diverse these days, that you can spend a lifetime fiddling with them all. But you do have to find at least one a stick with it.

The chipping is more about the technigue rather then the grip. So get the good tips and work on that without worrying about grip there.

If the pro says you "have" to change, and you don't want to, at least make sure you have tried it his way first. If after that and you still want to go back to the 10 finger, then go back. If the pro say stuff like, "You will always have this problem or that problem if you don't change..." then find another pro.
