distance from ball!

I'm never consistent when I address the ball. I constantly question how close I should stand to the golf ball. I use the stack and tilt golf swing and have pretty good success with it, but I was wondering if their was a drill or a way of measuring so I can be more consistent in this aspect of my game. It seems to me that the pros stand alot closer to the ball then I do, that's why I'm always questioning my setup. I would appreciate any advice.

Re: distance from ball!

I don't know that I have any drills, but I've been battling this same issue. I've found I can tell if I'm the right distance from the ball based on two factors. 1) that my arms are hanging straight down from the shoulders when the rest of my posture is set and 2) based on number one, my shoulders are completely relaxed (no tensing or hunching).

I find if I meet both of these criteria, I feel as though I am crowding the ball, but my contact becomes much more consistent. Any deviation on either point above and I start blading/topping the ball.

All of the above applies to my irons. My driver is a whole other story and it's not working out so well right now.

Try out this site, there are a number of drills here which may help including distance from ball

near the end he does an "elephant" drill to confirm the correct distance to the ball. Works great for me and super easy.

It depends on what kind of swing you have. If you have a one plane swing you will bend a little more forwards from the hips and your arms will be more in plane with the shaft at address. In a two plane swing your arms will hang straight down from the shoulders.

But it can be used by both:

2-plane: The right hand should swing back to where it grips the club.

1-plane: The RH will swing back to the left hand or wrist depending on your setup. My advice here would be to do the drill when you are confident that your setup is good and take note of where your RH swings ... then use this as a guide if you are unsure of a setup.

would you say that the stack and tilt golf swing setup is more of a 1 plane setup?

I have no clue (I don't know much about stack-and-tilt), maybe one of the others know.

Re: distance from ball!

This video is very good for the basic setup and will help remind folks of a few points in the set up.

http://consistentgolf.com/blog/?p=46

Nice one.

Regarding the elephant set up, it will depend on your arm position and your relaxed point for the hands and arms below the shoulder as they swing back and forth.
I say this will change because if you are a heavy chap/lady then you will find that your hand position will be more away from the hips at address, and nearer if you are on the thin side.

The other way of checking hand position relative to the body is to take your address position (bent over from the hips) and grip relative to the ball on the floor and take the right hand off (right hand golfer) and place it behind the butt end of the grip you should just feel that it fits in-between the belt buckle and the butt end of the club. (Faldo setup) But try both see what happens!! You might find they conflict with each other and you will find a happy medium between the two.

The other theory is to just hit the golf ball well and the rest of the swing will fall into place. (Not my theory though) I would go with one of the above.

Good luck

Regards Cliff
