hitting the ball before the ground if the ground is hit at all

I can't seem to hit any club under a 6i properly consitantly. my 9i when i hit it right goes about 150 but most of the time i end up thinning it and sending it 180+ and it looks like i just hit my 5i. when i really try to hit with a more descending blow with my 9i i end up KILLING the ground and the ball goes aboue 100yrds. i would say 80% of the time i pic the ball clean and never leave a divot. which might sound nice if i was in a fairway bunker but when your PW distance is 100 pitch and you end up hitting it 160yrds that really sucks and your scores will climb real fast, then you get cautios and next time swing decelerating and end up biffing it or fatting it 5 yrds. I guess that means with my 5i and above I am hitting it at the bottom of the club, but the loft is so low it really doesn't matter because my 5i goes about 215, 3w 240 and my driver about 270.
based on the distances i am getting i can pretty much garantee and i am not casting it, i think i need a more descending blow or something, i can't figure out what i need to do to fix it.

Is there any swing thoughts or techniques used to hit the ball with a more descending blow? or hit the ball higher up on the face of the club? thoose few times i do hit it it sounds so good and crisp and i just love it.

hi golfingguy
maybe you should get away from the idea of hitting the ball and think more about swing the club and letting the ball just get in the club's way and that way let the club do the work. if you think of a point as few inches ahead of the ball and think of that as impact area and not the ball then i think you will start swinging through the ball cleaner.
cheers

Re: hitting the ball before the ground if the ground is hit at all

I was just discussing this very thing with a guy who's getting pretty good at being a swing coach. The idea is that not very many golfers know how they're supposed to be using their clubs.

Stick a tee in the ground 3 inches in front of the ball, with the top of the tee level with the top of the grass. Swing so that you take out the tee and hit the ball.

If you're topping it, move the tee towards the ball a half inch, and try again.

thanks, this seemed to work quite good. 1st time in my life i was able make some great divots. Just don't tell my driving range guy this I was chucking grass like no ones business nice even strips vs sending chunks and hard dirt/sand and grass all over the place. and it wasn't thoose deep fat chunking divots that i had when i tried to hit down on it, it was not very deep at all, and it feels so cool so see that grass go way out there, versus hit me in the face and legs and get dirt all over me and hurt my wrist and break my clubs and ruin the grass with the deep impact ones. I have broken 3 clubs in my short 1-2 year career from crushing the earth with my clubs. I should note they were graphite shafts.

thanks too, this has helped my short game a ton, i think of stoping about 6-12 inches in front of the ball and the shots are so crisp and controlled. i shank or thin it like 95% less.
