Dropping the hands at address.

Had a pretty poor ball striking weekend just gone, and I played with my ex trainee pro mate from my club during our away pennant match. After the match, he mentioned that he had noticed that I had "dropped my hands" at address.

However, I wondered what effect this action, and it was certainly subconcious, might have...

Any thoughts...???

Cheers

If dropping the hands at address is what I'm thinking it could be that you were more bent over with the hands closer to your body, causing more of an angle between the hands and shaft. (Ryan Moore) if that is what dropping the hands means......If not then I could learn alot from this

That's pretty much covered it dawg!

It raises the toe of the club so it's not sitting as it should at address. Sweet strikes may go high but shorter than normal (it's a known way of hitting a higher trajectory - just don't ask me how that works. Someone on here probably knows).

It will cause a different plane than you're used too as well so you may feel like you're swining it the same way, but your arms may well compensate on the way up, and consequently on the way down, from your changed starting position.

The funny thing is when you try raising your hands and standing a little further away, you may find you've been doing it for a while without realising because it will feel very weird!

Re: Dropping the hands at address.

The only ways to drop your hands lower at address is to move them closer to your body or as suggested lower your spine angle, likewise to raise them you have to move them away or raise the spine angle. I would think he is suggesting you are moving them closer.

Moving them closer and especially if you introduce slack into your arms will get you closer to the ball at address, when you swing down the arms and hands will extend away from you with a tendency to hit from the heel end of the club or even shank. I know, I have done it myself.

With a two plane swing the arms should hang straight down from the shoulders, with a one plane the arms will be more on plane with the shaft at address so will be a bit forward of the chin.

Re: Dropping the hands at address.

hi
i agree with what Brian has just said, with the one plane the hands are more under the eyes and a two plane swing the hands are more under the chin.
with the one plane swing a lot of people go to a flatter lie on there irons, as much as 2 degrees and with the two plane swinger standing taller the often have the clubs changed to +1 degree as most pros seen to do this.
check the lie of your clubs when you feel you have your hands lower as you my be lifting the toe a little and you could end up digging the heal in an hitting the ball more to the left.
cheers
bill

Re: Dropping the hands at address.

Ok, throughout my match last Sunday, I was conscious of "lifting my hands" so as to address the club squarely behind the ball, not "toe up" which it turns out I was doing. This was with my irons and my putter.

Bottom line, struck the ball so much better than the week previous.

And, putted the lights out.

Looking forward to my club game this week and hopefully shaving some more strokes off the handicap.

Cheers
