Shot shaping

Hi guys,

After watching the US open, I have been inspired to try to learn to shape my shots. What club is generally considered the easiest to start to learn on.

shaping shots requires sidespin so wedges and short irons are out as they impart heaps of backspin on the ball.

i dont try to shape anything shorter than a 7 iron

So would I be right in guessing a 5 iron would be a good start then?

i played this morning in a comp and the 15th was a 259yd par 4 the had a 90deg dogleg left, i aimed my clubface at 12 o'clock (straight ahead) then aligned myself to 1 o'clock and it drew lovely around the corner leaving a LW onto the green and a birdie putt which i holed.

put plenty of practise in and you will soon start shaping the ball fairly easily

i find i 5 iron a good club to use to work on shot shaping.
i often use to hit 3 balls with a fade with a 4 iron and then change to a 5 iron and hit 3 balls with a draw. i found that the distance was about the same and is a good drill on the range.
if you have a 1 iron or a 2 iron that a great club to use as it shows the mistakes up and its a club where you have to swing more than hit. its get you into a rhythm and also into good ball striking as any miss hits show up any faults in your swing.

Your driver is a good club to practice ball bending, the sidespin will have more effect than other clubs.

Even with a square head driver?

Even with a square headed driver.

It won't be quite as dramatic as a lesser-MOI driver, but it'll be there.

I play a 5500 MOI driver - and can (and do ) slice it.

Less loft = less spin. If you need to, try hitting a 3 or 4 iron (or 5 or 7 wood). I'd only do this if your driver isn't 'working' (ha ha!! Working!)

I don't like to try shaping shots with my driver, because I don't like messing with my driver swing.

FWIW, I effectively shape shots with my 8 iron - and can do it with my PW, too.

I am new here, and certainly no great player. But i have had good luck shaping shops, draws and fades or more just by opening and closing my stance. I. E. dropping my right foot back a half step for a draw or the oppisite.

Jeez Davy, I hope there is nothing breakable in those shops
