| Breakdown of the wrists at top of backswing I suffer from cocking my wrists too much on the backswing. The angle between my forearm and the shaft is about 45 degrees whereas ideally i want it at about 90 degrees. This makes my iron play very inconsistent. Because i overcock my wrists I dont complete my shoulder turn as the club would be way past parallel. Has anyone got any drills to reduce the amount of wrist cock on the backswing because i have been doing this for a long time and its hard to break the habit. Thanks |

which wrist is "overcocking" lets make sure you know what cocking is 1st so we are on the same page hold out your right hand in the handshake position moving your thumb towards the shoulder and the pinking towards the ground is cocking uncocking. if you can get more than a 50-60degree cock like that, you got some wierd bones/joints. cupping is the hanshake postion, moving the back of the hand towards your forearm and uncupping is moving the palm towards the forearm. if you are gripping the club correctly your left hand prevents you from going back too far. the left hand cocks only it soesn't cup, though some golf teacehs a very slight cup on uncup, generally you should be strait left hand and cock only. if you do that you can't get more than a 90 angle between your arm and the shaft. now if you cup your left wrist a lot as you are cuping and cocking your right wrist as ben hogan did and fan the club open in the BS then, you can slighly exceed the 90 angle and go to 50 ![]() i am guessing that is about the 45 you are talking about. ben opens the club and closed it as he downswings so that he won't put any hook spin on it. if he didn't open it by the time he got to impact he would have way too much hook spin. but that is a timing issue and i am not ben hogan so i like to take timing out try this website for advice/drills http://www.newgolfswing.com/newgolfswing05.php |

| Re: Breakdown of the wrists at top of backswing that is a valid method, and the one newgolfswing teaches. i learned that way, but it made my short game suffer way too much so i stoped doing that. but there are many pros that do that. |

| Re: Breakdown of the wrists at top of backswing I think that my problem is that i grip the club too loosely so at the top the last three fingers of my left hand let go of the club slightly making it look like my wrists overcock. I get confused because i hear that you apply pressure with the last three fingers of your left hand but your grip tension should be low like your trapping a small bird between your hands without crushing it. It seems like i have to grip a bit too hard to stop overswinging but ill give it a go. It may be that im so used to griping loosely. |

but as far as the grip tension not crushing a small bird. good think i don't practice with small ,or big birds for that matter, becuase i would have PETA all over me. you tension you need to grip the club is the tension you need to grip to club. your senses are way to sensative to measure. if you tell yourselve you don't want to let go of the club and start with a grip (weak1-10death scale) of 2or 3 by the time you get to impact you will probly end up at about a 7. i think bird crushing grip would be at about 3-4. but with that club head gaining speed and trying to fly out you are deffinatley going to have to crush some birds to hang on to it i can garante that. you fit anyone with grip pressure sensors and test that out, i would be real surprised of someone could do that w/o crushing a bird, unless you are talking about a chip or pitch. most of old golf cliche's came from a truth and got distorted to something wrong. i think someone was just trying to teach someone not to death grip it and for drill purposes you have to excagurate to get a point across. |
