Hand turnover during Through Swing

I do not hit balls long. Not even decent distances. One of my friends did suggest that I am not turning my right hand over my left (I am right handed player) during the through Swing process and this is killing the speed. I did try " turning over" the hand but this results in shots going straight left. Let me add that the ball contact is more consistent and feels better; I am also able to hit longer shots with seemingly less effort but the flight direction makes me tentative and I am not so sure what I am doing is right. I do see the pros do it naturally when I closely observe their swing actions but at what point should I turn the hand over. Or is there a fundamental error in my understanding of the whole issue.
Help please

Re: Hand turnover during Through Swing

Hi tnsekhar,

It's hard to tell with the info you have given, but it sounds like you are only swinging with your arms. Use your larger muscles (legs) to get your power and the smaller muscles to control the club.

If you could post your swing on this site I could go through the video and give you some pointers.

Re: Hand turnover during Through Swing

I'm just curious as to how to execute a hand turnover, and when it should be done?

Re: Hand turnover during Through Swing

This is a little drill my coach showed me at the begining which helped me no end.

1) make sure your right hand is wrapped over your left thumb so that you can just see the first two knuckles on right hand when you address the ball.

2) Now stand at 45 degrees to the direction you wish to hit ball.

3) Setup to hit ball in direction you want, this will feel very wierd as the ball will be just insde left foot buut your right foot will be a sholder width back and away from ball.

4) Now do the normal swing but aim in the direction you wish to go. This will bring you hands over and around your body conteracting any slice and making you roll your hands.

5) Now gradually over a number of swings bring your right foot back in. Hopfully you should be swinging with your hands turning over slightly and finishing down the line with club toe pointing upwards.

6) this is a basic drill for beginners and will not improve a better players swing.
