Started pulling the ball suddenly

Hi. I have come down from 11 to 8 in a couple of months. All of a sudden I have started pulling the ball with mid/long irons.Think setup is ok but recently had sore back so might be affecting swing. Do you think this may be restricting/altering swing path through the ball creating more 'top half' at impact. Back is ok now but subconsciously might be protecting it a bit. As you can imagine this annoying coz I have played good stuff to get handicap down. Any ideas?

Re: Started pulling the ball suddenly

Hi Stratts,

Try slowing your backswing down. It is very important to get set in the right position at the top of your swing. I find when I rush my backswing I also tend to rush my downswing which gets my shoulders turning too soon. If this doesn't help, start back at the basics. Work with your half shot (club only waist high) and hit shots. Build up to 3/4 shots and eventually to full shots. If your pull is still there, you should notice that it only exists from the 3/4 to full shot. This is a positioning problem at the top of your swing and it will give you a place to start at. Remember to let your larger muscles (i.e. legs) create the power in your swing and the smaller muscles (i.e. arms) control the clubhead position.

Keep us updated on your success!

Re: Started pulling the ball suddenly

I agree with Gord and will throw in 2 cents.

When one has a back problem finishing the swing can be a problem getting streched to the finish and leaving the through swing short. A practice drill is from address go to a finish position, then work back to the top. Then go back to a finish. The first move will engrain the finish position, Going backward to the top will give the swing the path, then the through swing will strech the muscles on the same path. Do this for 15 minutes a day and your swing will come back quickly.

Thumbs up Re: Started pulling the ball suddenly

Thanks guys,

Both tips have helped. Back is looser from doin excersises and other stretches I have been doing so getting through the ball better.

Someone else noticed that my swing had speeded up slightly as well so I have got the tempo/timing back to good effect.

Just as well as I have the summer matchplay knockout final Saturday so at least I might put up a bit of a fight now!!

Thanks again

Stratts
